Torn Meniscus or Just A Sprain?

by John
(Illinois)

I started having knee pain about 3 months ago, during summer football camp. My knee swelled up really big, and it hurt to put weight on it. Initially, they thought that it was just a sprain, and so I was told to rest, use ice, and stop playing for a few days.

The swelling got better, but it still hurt when I tried to play. And it popped a lot, and felt like it got stuck. Finally, I had an MRI which the doctor said would show what was wrong. I had torn my meniscus.

I had surgery a few weeks ago, and things are getting better. The hardest part of the whole thing is that I can't play football. It is my senior season, and I really want to be out on the field.

I have been going to rehab, and I can bend my knee almost all the way, it isn't swollen much anymore, and they say I get to start running in a couple more weeks. The sooner the better.

I really want to play!

Great Story!

Thanks for the story John. Sometimes it is hard to tell if it is a meniscus tear, or just a sprain. Glad to know that you are doing better. Hang in there, you will get back to playing!

I know how you feel I have a torn meniscus in one knee and a sprain in the other at one point well they thought that both of them where sprains until they took the MRIs and one of them where the meniscus and the other was the ACL great but they would not do surgery on my meniscus but would on my ACL beacuse it was worse. so i know how you feel I hope that you get well soon!
