Torn Meniscus

by Georgia Kent
(Bend, Oregon)

I am a very active 62 year old lady. I was dianoised with a torn Meniscus five years ago and chose not to have immediate surgery. I have a lot of swelling but minor discomfort.I wear a knee support all the time. I walk three miles a day or bike 10 miles. My question is am I doing irreversable damage and is surgery a absolute necessity?
Thank you,

surgery

Depending on your activities (sports, twisting, running, etc) it is possible to continue to tear portions of the meniscus. Deciding on surgery generally falls on 1) how is the injury affecting your ability to participate in activities you enjoy, and 2) how much pain and discomfort you are having.

I would discuss with your doctor the benefits/drawbacks on surgery and if it is really needed given your current symptoms and activities.
