Tyler Redd's ACL Injury

by Tyler Redd
(Dallas, Georgia United States)

I play linebacker for the East Paulding High School in Dallas, Georgia. It was the first football game of the year when i had the nightmare of every athlete. I worked my but off for three years, gained fifty pounds, worked out everyday passionately to gain a starting spot. After those three years of hard work i came out the strongest pound for pound on the team, people respected and feared me it felt good. I got the starting spot and i enjoyed it for sixteen minutes into the game. I guess it wasn't meant to be i just planted my foot in the ground no one touched me. It didn't hurt it just buckled on me. I tried to walk off the field and made it about four steps before it folded under me . I hade a grade two mcl tear and a full acl tear. I have yet to have surgery it isn't for another three weeks. The doctors tell me i am done with football and it will take six months to recover but the truth is i feel no pain and can put full weight on it, jog, I can bend it plenty past 90 degrees with no pain and straighten it completly locked out, jump ( abnormally but still) and bike. There is almost no swelling anymore (it was the size of a softball) i have probably 70% of my normal quad strength and my knee looks almost normal. I feel like there is nothing wrong except that i am not playing football. It suck and isn't fair. I am one of the few that really love the game on the team. I have pre op in two weeks and maybe they will say they were wrong even though i could even see that it was torn on the MRI. Maybe God will see fit to let me heal and be a tool to help spread his word through telling this whole story. That is what i pray for everyday. I still support my team but wish with everything i got that i can get back out there before the season is over. Thank you it helps to let some of this out

praying for you

You are an inspiration to others in the way you have handled this. God has big plans for you, just do not know what they are.

Hang in there

Knee injuries are tough. I had ACL reconstruction about 2 ˝ months ago. I waiting 6 months before getting the surgery so I missed out on a lot (the end of the ski season, spring hiking, summer waterskiing, etc.). However, I am so glad I did it. I just wish I did it sooner so I could have gotten back to the things I love to do sooner. I can only imagine starting out the football season and having that happen. I at least made it half way through the ski season. Stay strong and focus on getting through this bump in the road and you’ll be back before you know it.

I no the feeling.. same happened to me! I was playing gaelic football (im irish), 2nd game of the season when tore my acl!! I had to wait 7months before the surgery and am now nearly 4months post op.. the worst thing after the op is getting your head around it emotionally.. it was obviously very painful but I found it harder to cope with not being able to train as I play a number of sports. I am also doing a sports science degree in university so my life revolves around sport.. it is so hard to see people doing the things you love when you cant do it... i still go to training to support my team but its been nearly a year since iv played an am dying to go back! but i think I still have 3 or 4months before I can play again :( however, you will go very far with a positive attitude! follow all the instructions given by the surgeon and the physio, the harder you work the faster your recovery will be!!

good luck with your recovery!

first of all I wouldnt let any doctor tell you if you can play or not play ever again. the NFL is full of dudes who have come back from ACL tears...Tom Brady and Willis Mcgahee just to name a few. Secondly, this happened for a reason and all you can do is trust God. I play division !college basketball, and it is my life, I tore my ACL last month...the way I look at it, this gives me a chance to get a different perspective on life, and focus on things other than basketball. I look at it as more of a learning opportunity given to me by God. It's hard to find the positives but trust that God has an ultimate plan for you and you will find them
