Weird ankle sprain

by Lynne

I have sprained my ankle seriously three times and have had many minor sprains to the same foot in the past. Once my foot was broken and I never knew and it was treated as a sprain. I have recently injured my ankle again and it was nothing like any I have had. I was walking along a flat floor and felt my ankle lock up completely and instantly felt pain from swelling so rapid that I barely had chance to undo my laces and get my boot off.

I did not go over on my ankle of twist it at all. It was bruised on the bottom of my foot and the swelling was like a hard local lump on the top of the foot.

I like to walk and enjoy hiking and snow shoeing so am now wondering if it should be braced when I do sports...???

What happened?

ankle sprain

This is an odd mechanism and presentation for an ankle sprain. The rapid swelling and the way that it was localized over the top of the foot is of concern, especially since you did not twist it or roll over on it.

I would recommend having it looked at by your doctor, and get an X-ray. It is possible there is something more than a sprain going on here.

A brace would be a good idea with sports and activities considering your previous history of sprains. A good rehabilitation program focused on strengthening and balance might also help.
