Wendy's Uphappy Triad

by Wendy Nieuwland
(Barrie, Ontario Canada)

I sustained the uphappy triad (ACL, MCL and meniscus) playing volleyball. Worse than having the unhappy triad was that I also got two trauma induced blood clots (DVT) in my calf probably two hours after sustaining my injury!

ACL reconstruction is post poned until the DVT is gone. I have been doing my best to control swelling and get my range of motion and strength back. I am now lacking 15 degrees to get to full extension and have 100 degrees of flexion. Can walk a bit without crutches but then swelling begins, so I am mostly still on the crutches as my gait pattern is better as well.

Fortunately for me, I work in a physiotherapy clinic so there is no shortage of advise or rehab...now it is just a wait for the DVT resolution and the surgery!-

by: kayla

Hi, i was just wondering how your surgery went and what tendon you used to repair your acl with. I had the exact thing happen to me, except i was paying basketball. My surgery is in two weeks and still don't know what tendon is best for me to use. Do you have any suggestions? Let me know. Thanks :)

Update on Wendy's Unhappy Triad NEW
by: Wendy Nieuwland

April, 24, 2009 - After being on blood thinners for just shy of 3 months and doing my best to exercise, I just found out that my DVT is now gone!! Now, I await a date for surgery! My pre-surgical rehab has been amazing. I have full range, good strength and only have pain if I twist the wrong way when walking too fast. Now, I wait!

Will keep you posted.

rotten luck NEW
by: Bart - SII

Sounds like you are in good hands, working in a clinic with lots of rehab minds together. Good luck with the upcoming surgery - I am sure you will have extra hoops to jump through given the PMH of DVT.

Keep us posted!
