when can i stand and walk after tibial fracture

by sandeep
(india)

I had met with an accident 3 months back. Upper end of tibia intercondylar fracture. Was immobilized in a plaster of paris cast for 2 months. When should i start standing full weight bearing on my affected leg and how much pressure i can put on my leg while bending, as it does not flexes more than 35 degrees. I am afraid it might get broken again. plz suggest

Check with your doctor...
by: Bart - SII

Intercondylar fractures can be tricky to manage, and usually take much longer times of non-weightbearing before starting to walk.

The best thing for you to do is to check with your physician to determine if you are ready to start progressing your weight bearing. Follow up X-rays can tell how well the bone is healing and whether or not you are ready to start walking.

Most of the tibial plateau fractures I have seen have been surgically fixed and they remained non weight bearing for 3 months or so, then gradually progressing their status over the next 2-3 weeks after that.

Rehabilitation would be very good for you to help get your knee bending again, as well as helping to restore a normal gait pattern once you do start walking again.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.

bending knee stretching leg
by: Anonymous

I have a tiail plateau fracture from skiing accidents a week old. I am in a split, Swelling is going down. Doctor said cant bare weight on it for 12 weeks. I was very active person. When can I start to stretch out that keg as much as comfortable and begin to bend knee. Knee hurt when bend it to about 30 degrees.
Do I have to keep the leg still and straight all the time for early part of recovery?
