when can i stand and walk after tibial fracture

by sandeep
(india)

I had met with an accident 3 months back. Upper end of tibia intercondylar fracture. Was immobilized in a plaster of paris cast for 2 months. When should i start standing full weight bearing on my affected leg and how much pressure i can put on my leg while bending, as it does not flexes more than 35 degrees. I am afraid it might get broken again. plz suggest

Check with your doctor...
by: Bart - SII

Intercondylar fractures can be tricky to manage, and usually take much longer times of non-weightbearing before starting to walk.

The best thing for you to do is to check with your physician to determine if you are ready to start progressing your weight bearing. Follow up X-rays can tell how well the bone is healing and whether or not you are ready to start walking.

Most of the tibial plateau fractures I have seen have been surgically fixed and they remained non weight bearing for 3 months or so, then gradually progressing their status over the next 2-3 weeks after that.

Rehabilitation would be very good for you to help get your knee bending again, as well as helping to restore a normal gait pattern once you do start walking again.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.

bending knee stretching leg
by: Anonymous

I have a tiail plateau fracture from skiing accidents a week old. I am in a split, Swelling is going down. Doctor said cant bare weight on it for 12 weeks. I was very active person. When can I start to stretch out that keg as much as comfortable and begin to bend knee. Knee hurt when bend it to about 30 degrees.
Do I have to keep the leg still and straight all the time for early part of recovery?

when can i stand and walk after tibial fracture
by: Anonymous

Same time frames for me when I was injured in an auto accident. Surgery was a week after the accident to allow for swelling to go down, then I was in a straight leg brace for about 3 weeks.

Started PT on week three and had a CPM machine delivered to my house which I used for about 4 hours each day to keep my leg in motion. After 6 to 8 weeks I had more than a 90 degree flex. I changed from a straight leg brace to a flex brace which allowed 0 to 90 degrees of motion.

After 90 days I was allowed to toe touch and two weeks later partial weight bearing. On July 1st I was allowed weight as tolerated and returned to work last week!

I'm walking with a cane now and continuing with PT x a week. Also have some numbness around the incision site which I hear is common and can take as long as a year to go away...

Start month 6 of my life post accident and am hopeful for a full recovery - confident of 80% :)

broken tibia NEW
by: Carrie

My leg was broke on the 10th of March 2013. I had surgery on the 22nd of March 2013. The doctor put a rod in and i have 2 screws at the ankle and 2 screws at the knee. I started physical therapy on the 10th of April. However during the weight bearing part of therapy part of my bone at the ankle broke off around the screws and now I have full rotation of my ankle. I was lucky I did not need surgery again to remove the shards of bone the doctors said that it will mend itself. I was informed yesterday 4/18/13 that I should be walking on my own by the end of next month 5/18/13 omg I can not wait.

Tibial Plateau Fracture NEW
by: Anonymous

On Aug 26, 2013 I fractured tibia right below knee cap. Fortunately it did not swell alot so surgery was done within 12 hours of the fall, which is a good thing! There were many fragments and assorted parts, pins and screws were put in to keep it all together. Week one was pretty much stationary with a flexible brace, week two started knee and ankle flexes. Wasn't approved for weight bearing until Nov 19, so PT most recently was leg lifts and trying to build the thigh muscle to ready it for walking. I'm back to work now, using walker with partial weight bearing. It's starting to hurt more, but figure this is a good sign. I hope to be walking by end of December which would have been four mos from injury to amubulatory. It's been a long time!

bilateral TPF NEW
by: Anonymous

On Dec. 11 I broke both my legs skiing...two tibia plateau fractures and a intercondylar eminence fx on left leg as well. I was fortunate...no displacement (slight displacement on eminence fx) so no surgery, no hospital, was in a foreign country...so plane trip home was scary with both legs in splints. fortunately little pain (or I was just in shock). I started ROM exercises as tolerable by second week. It is now 8 weeks...full ROM and still no pain BUT still no WB. My doc says to avoid future complications he is waiting full 12 weeks on leg with one break before allowing PWB and up to 16 wks before FWB...who knows when with leg with two breaks (I call that my week-behind as it is always a week behind the other). I feel fine and legs look fine... The hardest part is the waiting game...my doc says it is best to wait now and avoid future complications. I am super frustrated being trapped in a wheel chair...going stir crazy. From the research I have read, and I am experience, it is a long recovery....especially if you don't have one good leg to rely on.

I think it takes too much time to cure from this fracture injury. So to reduce the time period you have to take much rest as per the advice from the doctor. Don’t be afraid it will be alright and you can stand and walk after curing it completely. windows 7 problems

by: Anonymous

I fractured my tibial plateau on the left knee on 22.10.2015.got it done 2weeks later due to heavy swelling.9screws 2metal plates and a bone grafting.after 6week on brace... i finally take the courage to have first weightbearing.at first its painful and difficult despite walking with cluthes...but i dont give up and after a fee days itried doing it without the cluthes and i manage to walk in a slow pace and tried going up and down e stairs .no doubt its a bit painful but worth trying.its all in your mind.my next appointment is just round the corner ..and i want to keep it frm my surgeon.let see what the xray shows.so far it didnt swell and just feel a little weak on the whole effected legs as muscles strain during the no weightbearing period.

BILATERAL TFP NEW
by: Anonymous

Hi, I saw a comment from early 2015 from a poster who had suffered TFP's in both legs after a skiing accident. I was wondering how he/she is progressing, as I too have incurred two TFP's, after a fall from a horse, which were operated on early February this year.
During the operation, the OS repaired the left knee with a large screw through the plateau, and the right knee with a plate and 9 screws. Bone grafts were needed on both knees due to compression. Apparently I fell on my feet which crumpled under me, and my body weight crushed my knees. I consider myself very lucky, considering I landed on back and head bounced a few times. Thank God I was wearing a hat!
I started PT on a knee bending machine within a few days, and continued exercises at home with a visiting PT 3 times a week.
It's now 13 weeks after op, and although I have progressed to walking on one crutch, without too many problems, am still suffering from badly swollen legs and feet. PT reckons I'm probably doing too much, not resting and icing knees often enough, which is probably correct, as I hate laying around doing nothing!
Anyway, I was wondering how the original Bilateral TFP poster was getting along now it's around a year down the line, and what problems he/she still have, if any.

Trying to walk again after fracture tibia plateau NEW
by: Kelly

I fractured my right Tibial Plateau on July 12, 2016 from camping. My Dr automatically had me on crutches with NWB. My surgery wasn't until August 8, 2016. The way my Tibial Plateau was fractured my surgeon said he never seen anything like it before. He ended up placing calcium phosphate cement in there instead of screws and plates because he said it wasn't enough bone broken to hold. I started physical therapy 3 weeks after surgeey. Still NWB afterwards until September 15th 2016 I was allowed 50% WB. As of September 29th 2016 I can Full WB. It's hard trying to learn how to walk again because my ankle seem so weak because it hurts every time I put weight on it to walk. My therapy sessions has been postponed for the moment so I'm working with myself at home on learning how to walk again. My question is, has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal for my ankle to hurt more than my knee is when trying to walk? I still use one crutch from time to time to ease some of the pain off my ankle but I believe thats defeating the purpose of trying to learn how to walk again especially when I can FWB. Any suggestions?
