when can i stand and walk after tibial fracture

by sandeep
(india)

I had met with an accident 3 months back. Upper end of tibia intercondylar fracture. Was immobilized in a plaster of paris cast for 2 months. When should i start standing full weight bearing on my affected leg and how much pressure i can put on my leg while bending, as it does not flexes more than 35 degrees. I am afraid it might get broken again. plz suggest

Check with your doctor...
by: Bart - SII

Intercondylar fractures can be tricky to manage, and usually take much longer times of non-weightbearing before starting to walk.

The best thing for you to do is to check with your physician to determine if you are ready to start progressing your weight bearing. Follow up X-rays can tell how well the bone is healing and whether or not you are ready to start walking.

Most of the tibial plateau fractures I have seen have been surgically fixed and they remained non weight bearing for 3 months or so, then gradually progressing their status over the next 2-3 weeks after that.

Rehabilitation would be very good for you to help get your knee bending again, as well as helping to restore a normal gait pattern once you do start walking again.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.

bending knee stretching leg
by: Anonymous

I have a tiail plateau fracture from skiing accidents a week old. I am in a split, Swelling is going down. Doctor said cant bare weight on it for 12 weeks. I was very active person. When can I start to stretch out that keg as much as comfortable and begin to bend knee. Knee hurt when bend it to about 30 degrees.
Do I have to keep the leg still and straight all the time for early part of recovery?

Same time frames for me when I was injured in an auto accident. Surgery was a week after the accident to allow for swelling to go down, then I was in a straight leg brace for about 3 weeks.

Started PT on week three and had a CPM machine delivered to my house which I used for about 4 hours each day to keep my leg in motion. After 6 to 8 weeks I had more than a 90 degree flex. I changed from a straight leg brace to a flex brace which allowed 0 to 90 degrees of motion.

After 90 days I was allowed to toe touch and two weeks later partial weight bearing. On July 1st I was allowed weight as tolerated and returned to work last week!

I'm walking with a cane now and continuing with PT x a week. Also have some numbness around the incision site which I hear is common and can take as long as a year to go away...

Start month 6 of my life post accident and am hopeful for a full recovery - confident of 80% :)

broken tibia NEW
by: Carrie

My leg was broke on the 10th of March 2013. I had surgery on the 22nd of March 2013. The doctor put a rod in and i have 2 screws at the ankle and 2 screws at the knee. I started physical therapy on the 10th of April. However during the weight bearing part of therapy part of my bone at the ankle broke off around the screws and now I have full rotation of my ankle. I was lucky I did not need surgery again to remove the shards of bone the doctors said that it will mend itself. I was informed yesterday 4/18/13 that I should be walking on my own by the end of next month 5/18/13 omg I can not wait.
