Im an ace in my squadron

I sprained my ankle a week ago while playing basketball. Probably a 2nd degree injury. It hurts so much for the first two days but it went off for the next days. The swelling is still there but it shrunk a bit.

My problem is,I still cannot walk on my right foot after a week. The pain reappeared when I try to stand on both feet.I can only put pressure on my right foot when I sit or am lying down.

Is it normal?

RICE NEW
by: Kurt

You said RICE is crucial in the first 24 hours. But what about if I did not/could not use RICE immediately. I write from overseas where the medical treatment is less than stelar. They did not do an X-ray, but doc said it was not broken because of the downward pressure I was able to apply (as doc pushed up).
I am using the RICE principles now, I started a day after the injury and, after a week, have not seen much progress. So should i just continue with RICE?

Ankle sprain pain 2
by: Aaron

Hi,I sprained my ankle a month and a half ago,I got my x ray and there's no broken bone.So I just iced and immobilized it for a couple of weeks.I think most of the damage has healed up, but I still have a hard lump on the top of my foot, that looks like a small "hill" under the skin. It doesn't feel like the swelling up which you get right after the ankle sprain happens, which is soft when you touch it. My lump is quite hard, and only hurts when I walk too far or jumping. My foot look deformed when when you look at it from different angles. Why its there?

AWESOME PICTURE!!
by: Bart - SII

I usually hope for pictures of peoples injuries but this one is so cool! Thanks for the addition.

First off, have you seen a doctor and had an X-ray yet? Not being able to bear weight a week later makes me worry that there could be a fracture...so if you haven't yet had it looked at, you should do that soon.

Ankle sprains can be very painful, especially during the first week. The fact that you can't bear much weight is probably not too alarming (once a fracture is ruled out!). The swelling in the joint, as well as the inflammatory response of the body will keep it very irritated for the first 7-10 days.

You can gradually work up to putting weight on it by simply shifting your weight side to side, only putting as much as you can tolerate on your injured ankle. Do this several times a day and try to increase your weight bearing this way.

Working on range of motion and gentle stretching will also help with the swelling and the pain. Sometimes it can take a couple weeks before you can put all of your weight on it - that is normal, and everyone reacts differently.

Check out the ankle rehab section of the site for more information on recovering from a sprain. And make sure you get an X-ray if you haven't already.
