Question - Broken 5th Metatarsal

by Carol
(S. Ireland)

Hi,
Broke my 5th metatarsal two weeks ago, was put in backslab then into a plaster cast which came loose then back into a backslab until I could see ortho Dr., then last Wednesday a full cast again.

Dr says in four weeks this cast will come off and should be ok. I am nearly 60 and very concerned at some of the things posted on the net.

Is this the usual time for being in a plaster cast? I have crutches and a special ortho shoe that I can walk on for a while between resting.

Will it heal ok by then? Also what is next step (so to speak)after removal of cast?

Would appreciate a reply,

Thanking you,
A mother depending on others right now. Carol

Depressing NEW
by: Anonymous

Ugghhh All of your comments are so depressing! Does anyone have a story to share that is more positve??? I broke my 5th metatarsal bone [pretty bad from what I have been told by my ortho and best friend who has been an xray tech for over 15years] It has been just 4 weeks in a boot, he told me a reg cast was not needed as long as I only took this off to shower and sleep. My xray showed the bone has not shitfed and has just barely started mending. I am so upset, I am an avid gym person and ride horses not being able to do this things is already killing me and you all say horrible things. PLEASE someone give me some hope. He says it will fix itself and perfers not to do surgery, I go back for another x-ray in 3-1/2 weeks. FIngers crossed - but does anyone have some positive feed back out there??

a sloppy feeling!!!! NEW
by: Bilal

on april 27, i I have broken my 5th Metatarsal stepping off the curb at work.
Initially doctor put me on a backslab which was later converted into full pop.
after one & a half week rest from work & total bed rest i went to see a doc on may 8th. Surprisingly, on seeing a x-ray my doc cut the pop & put me on a ankle support bandage. It was so painful even today cant move nor cant take bath also not to drive and go any where really stuck up.
Its seems like the doctor has decided due to the pop gap between the fracture area has widen resultantly it will be take more weeks to recover.
Wish me best of luck!!!

Answer to 5th metatarsal on my left foot NEW
by: Anonymous

Hi,

Just to let you know I hurt my foot on November 16 and because of the holiday, I did not have surgery till the 28th. I was walking on it about 5 days after. Surgery, I was off my foot for about a month. I then had a walking cast till March. My foot was consider healed then, which is 5 months which is about 25 weeks.

if it is not healing, because of my break the doctor told me that it would not heal on its's own and need to have a plate put in. I wanted to make sure that it healed properly because I am 46 and didn't want to end up with problems. I agreed and I think it was the best thing for me.

With your foot broken insurance will not cover your injury and might decline you because of "pre conditions".

Answer to Preston. NEW

Hello Preston.

I broke my foot on November 16th. The doctor finally approved it healed by March 20th. Now because of the break I had to have a plate put in. I am still trying to recover from the surgery. My foot is still swollen and the doctor said that this portion will take upto 6 months to heal.

If the doctor suggest a plate, get it! Don't hesitate because it goes a long way to heal.

Broken 5th Metatarsal Left Foot NEW
by: Anonymous

Hi All,
I broke my 5th metatarsal on my left foot about 13 weeks ago. I lost my balance at cheer practice when sprinting from a formation to a stunt group and landed on my foot sideways and it basically collapsed and I fell to the floor. I still did 45 minutes of hard competition practice after the fact, but couldn't compete 4 days later because I learned I had broken my foot. On the bone, there was this huge black and purple line. And around my ankle it was completely green and blue, as well as all 4 of my toes.
I was put into a walking boot, but couldn't walk on it. Regardless of that, after 4 weeks I started walking on it a lot which I think stopped my healing process. But I went to the doctor 8 weeks after I had broke it and got another X-ray, and learned that it had not started healing at all. So I was back to not walking on it at all. Now it's only barely bruised around 2 of my toes and faded bruising around my ankle. I am still in high school and can't drive. It only started to feel better once I started taking Symphytum 3 times a day. Now my mom refuses to take me to the doctor until I get health insurance, which can take another 3 months to get. I'm not sure what to do because I read all these stories of how it can take about 6 months to heal, etc. It also feels alright to walk on everyday, but will that slow my process down? I don't know what to do.

Healing but weak ankle NEW
by: Healed but now weak ankle

Hello,

I have broken my 5th Metatarsal stepping off the curb at work. Luckly everything was covered by Workman's Comp.

According to the x-rays I broke the long bone in two place resulting in me getting a plat and 8 screws put in. Don't know which was more painful the break or having the plate put in.

As part of the surgery they took some bone marrow from the ankle of the same foot. I was put in a removable cast and stayed off work from December 2 to january 3rd which helpped.

Now everything is heal and I have been out of the boot for 2 weeks now (just the last two days) I am having weakness in my ankle (same as the broken foot). This weakeness shows up anytime I put my foot up to help with the swelling that sometimes occurs. The Weakness feels like the ankle will not support my weight and I have been using a cane.

Anyone else has this problem?

broken right and left 5th metararsal NEW
by: Anonymous

January 2010 I started haven severe pain on the side and top of my right foot. I went to the ortho Doc and had exrays which showed nothing. The next week I started having some swelling. I went back to Orth Doc and he gave me an antiflamitory which seemed to help the swelling. several weeks later i was jogging thru the yard and my 5th mertatarsal broke which was instatn pain and agony. I spent the next 10 months in 2 differnt plastor casts and walking boots. It never would heal, so the Ortho Doc put a screw in it December 2010.
In December of 2011 I started having pain on the outside and top of my left foot. This ment another trip to the Ortho Doc. The exrays showed nothing so the Doc told me to wear my walking boot to prevent it from breaking. Four weeks later it broke while I was stepping to get into my truck. I went to the Ortho Doc, he said that he was going to put a cast on it and I said Can we go ahead and fix it with surgery, and he said if thats what you want. I said yes because I did not want to be on cruthes for another 10 months. The right foot surgery was successful and I hope that after healing the left foot is successful. I still have no explanation as to why the 5th metatarsal has broken in both feet.

It's not a good thing if it still hurts... The only way to tell if its healed is to go full weight bearing if the Dr. has released you. I didn't rush mine at all. As far as the ankle goes just spell out each letter (With your FOOT) of the Alphbet in the air. ABCDEFG..... then do abcdefg etc.
Good Luck!!

Twist Fracture Update 21 mos. NEW
by: GeeJay

Original post date was Jun 30 2010. 12 months after my 5th met twist fracture I finally felt like I had most of my balance back. When the CAM walking boot came off, I stretched my Achilles tendon several times a day since I knew that would be the first to tear if I wasn't careful. And standing on my tiptoes still isn't a great option even now 21 mos after the fracture. I must have really done some tissue damage to the area around the base of my toes in the fall that helped cause my fracture. I often catch myself repositioning myself when standing still due to some leftover balancing issues. I think using the Wii balance board can help. My ortho insert for that right foot doesn't feeling like it is positioned properly anymore though the foot doc said the way the bone healed shouldn't affect it. He's giving in and will take new impressions for new orthotic inserts soon, because he knows I must be feeling something differently. Oh and I have a few knee problems in my good knee after overworking it during recovery. I'd still use the knee roller/walker again though, since mobility was what motivated me. Good luck all. Watch your step.

I also had pain 3 weeks after breaking 5th metertarsal. NEW
by: Sarah

Soberklutz I also had more pain weeks after breaking my 5th met than when I did it. I managed to get an appointment at the fracture clinic and had X-rays and I am all healed.

I was given instructions to start weight bearing, but I am scared. It hurts, or maybe that's in my head?? I have been in an aircast for 5weeks and the dr said to continue using for another 2 weight bearing then go on to normal shoes.

I am unsure how to get back my range of motion in my ankle as well? Anyone got any tips?

Thanks

Knee Walker NEW
by: VT Hokie Fan

Broke my 5th metatarsal a week ago from tripping over a treadmill. Had a temp cast until I could see the Ortho dr. and now have a boot. I am still not able to bear weight on the foot yet and I also had crutches which I could not use due to the pain & soreness from the fall. Just thought I would share with you what I found that works to get around and I am able to work too. I called a home health care facility and rented a Knee Walker. Trust me, it makes getting around so much easier. You can look up a picture of it on the web. GET ONE if your having issues using crutches.

I am having more sporadic pain now than i did after initially breaking. How long is average pain experienced by others? Haven't had any pain meds since 12 hours after breaking foot.

Katie,

There are five bones in the human body which may not heal as well as others. The 5th met is one of them. Due to lack of blood flow. I stood off my right foot forever. As a matter of fact yesterday was the first day that I actually ran again after four months didn't want to take a chance. Good luck!!

Second Time Around
by: Klutzy Katie

So, I broke the 5th metatarsal on my left foot 3 years ago. Walked on it for three days before I went for an x-ray - by which time, it was completely displaced. Ortho gave me a choice of 50% chance of healing without surgery or 90% with. I took the 90% option, did surgery, got cast, and was not allowed to bear weight on the foot for about two months. Then I was allowed in a walking boot. Healed fine.

Now, I did a repeat performance on my right. But I went to the doc asap so although the fracture is completely through the bone (again), it's only slightly displaced. This time the Ortho (different one) says "it'll heal," says I should wear a walking boot, taking it off to drive and shower (and I take it off for bed, too, but I'm super careful if I have to get out of bed for any reason. No surgery - and he's making it sound like my former doc did overkill. He said he was more than willing to bet money that I'll be healing within 3 weeks. 4 days into it, it's still swollen, but hurts a lot less.

So, I'm wondering if the weight-bearing actually speeds healing. I guess I'll see in couple of weeks.

metalwork is out

Further to my previous post, about having the plate & screws removed, this was done 2 and a half weeks ago. My bone is well healed and feels much better without the plate. It's a bit sore at present & I have to be slightly careful whilst the holes where the screws were fill in with new bone. Other than that I am looking forward to being unlimited again. My fracture was a very messy one, so metalwork was the only way to heal it, but it's done it's job & I hope it's all behind me now. Good luck to all of you!

Another broken 5th
by: Itchy

I broke my 5th metatarsal on 10/8/2011. Spiral fracture mid shaft. Did it by leaping over some stairs and landing on wet ground on the other side then slipped and twisted...break...ouch.

I was put in a backslab cast for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks the xray showed no healing but the fracture was stable and not displaced. They placed me in a cam boot for another 4 weeks. After 4 weeks in the cam boot ( 6 weeks in total ) the injury was not healed but was just beginning to show signs on the xray in part of the fracture of mending. The swelling went way down as well. The ortho looked at the xrays at the 6 week mark and prodded the injury zone quite hard and was happy that minimal pain was an indication that healing was in progress. The ortho told me to wean from the crutches over the next 2 days and walk in the cam boot. After walking ( if you call hobbling in a cam walking ) in the cam boot for 3 days the swelling in the foot is now almost non existent. And no pain at all. So at least I have more freedom.

I sort of miss the crutches because they were faster than the cam boot and gave me a reasonable workout at the same time. I have another 6 weeks in the cam boot ( will be 12 weeks in total ) before next xray and 100k hobble inspection. Im looking forward get out of the boot and get back to running and life in general.

You sound like me! I broke my fifth metatarsal august 8th. The Ortho put me in a boot for six weeks. Last week (Week 5, I had to teach ALL DAY. The boot caused my heel to become so sore and tired, I couldn't bear to wear it the next day. The next day, I decided to wrap my foot tightly with an ACE bandage and wear a running shoe. I am still limping around, but I think my break is healing. Like you, I do not feel pain when touching the side of the break. What does hurt is where I twisted the tendons in my ankle/foot. Those seem to be more frustrating than the actual break! I go to the doctor on the 19th...hopefully we will both heal and won't need recasted!

Hello All! I was involved in a motorcycle accident on June 16th of 2011. I shattered my right wrist and broke my 5th met on my right foot. I was in a temp cast for the first week and then a plaster cast for almost six weeks. Doc came in and put me in an air cast walking boot for another month. I go back Sep 2nd for a follow up. The last few days I've been walking on it very carefully, I have worn running shoes the last couple of days. Couldn't be in a wheel chair any longer. I haven't had any pain when I apply pressure to the area with my hand. I havent gone full on wieght barring yet either just by doing research I am still concerned. I want to go back to running and hit the gym so bad. But I am having a hard time just trying to walk again. I will give an update after I see the Doc. Just by doing the research on the net there is no real definite answer to how long it takes to heal every one's healing time varies. Good luck to all of you!!

Need to have plates out
by: Anonymous

Hi, I literally smashed my 5th metatarsal last November into small pieces, was NWB for 10 days to allow swelling to go down, then had pins and a plate put in & was NWB for 6 weeks. Complete pain, and the crutches were really hard work, but it has all healed well and I have nice new bone. (Maybe NWB is the key??). However, it seems I am reacting to the metal, so am having it removed soon. That's fine, because at the moment, I can't walk too far or too long without it hurting & the scar just looks annoyed. Also, we went to Cyprus earlier in the summer, it was hot, and I could feel the metal getting hot!!! Too close to the surface. So fingers crossed that I'll be back to normal after that...

5h Metatarsal Adventure
by: Chris

June 2, 2011, don't remember hurting the side of my left foot, but it started hurting to put weight on it. Stayed off the foot most of the week end. Played a golf tournement on the 8th. felt sharp pain and almost fell over. Had to take golf shoe off, and finished the game. While finishing I applied ice. The following day went to doctor had x-ray--no fracture of anykind showed up. Doc. said it might be gout, where it came on suddenly. Said to call back in a week after taking it easy and taking 2 Aleve morning and night, if it didn't get better. Well, it didn't, so I called and they said it must be gout as the x-ray showed no break. I was put on gout meds. that made me sick to my stomach and mirgraine. Four weeks later, ended up at podiatrist and guess what? Broken 5th metatarsal! Put me in a boot brace for three weeks, but didn't tell me no weight bearing. Went back and it is worse. Now on crutches, nwb and if not healing by Aug. 29th, may put me in a cast. Why is this injury so difficult to fix??? There, I feel better sharing :)

iv'e been walking without a limp for a few days now, and got back on stage 3days ago. give it a try, i couldent have done it without my pisiotherapist, i'm still going till everything is back 2 normall!!!

I broke the 5th metatarsal bone on the left foot 5/7/11. podiatrist did surgery on 5-13-11 with pins exposed. I was non wgt bearing and got a boot cast the 31st of May. It was not tolerable the first few days and the MD had me start trying it a little more each day. I continued nwb until about the 10th of June where I was able to start slowly. It is now 6-21, the sutures were removed but I cannot seem to get to one crutch. It throws me off balance and I feel pain to the outside of the foot where the break is. I can bear more wgt being stable on two crutches and can now stand with wgt on my heal. It is getting better by the day but I am still experiencing some swelling and slight pain.

Same break as all other posts
by: Cyndi (USA)

Broke mine 05/08/11. Felt a slight twinge of pain. Next day swelling and bruising. Went to general MD w/xray -- broken. The next week, Ortho Dr put me on NWB for 1 month. Go back tomorrow morning for verdict on possible healing. I'm not getting my hopes up. I have no pain, swelling or bruising. Mostly discomfort; I can tell something is wrong in there. I am tired of the boot, crutches, wheelchair and sitting on my bottom all day. Fortunately, I have a wonderful employer (been on medical leave for 4 weeks) and excellent (American) health insurance. Not worried about my job or coverage. But I don't want to spend all my medical leave I've accumulated over the last 10 years dealing with a broken foot. Besides, I'm ready to do something else. Completed all my house projects (seated, of course). Ready to get back to work!

Fractured 5th Metatarsal

Hi,

I fractured my 5th metatarsal 6 weeks ago, and had an xray last week which showed basically no healing from the first xray which was the day after my fracture. I am walking around pretty well, but finding my foot and leg start to ache after walking a long distance. Does anyone know of any good exercises I could do to strengthen my muscles? Also how long does a fracture of the 5th normall take to heal? I am due to go snow boarding in another 6 weeks and hoping to be 100% healed!!
Thanks in advance,

Badly Fractured 5th Metatarsal
by: Anonymous

Fractured the 5th metatarsal of my right foot falling on some stairs on March 5, 2011 during a weekend getaway at a rustic cabin for my 41st birthday. Because of weather and remoteness of cabin it was about 48 hours before I was able to get treated. I wasn't sure if I broke toes, sprained something etc and walked on heel until I was able to be seen by doctor. Initial x-ray @ urgent care showed mildly displaced distal spiral fracture of the 5th metatarsal. Put in short Aircast boot and referred to ortho clinic. Was seen by ortho PA on March 7 (this is the way ortho works at UW)the following day, given boot and told to be NWB for 4 weeks & return to follow up. 4 week follow up appointment (April 5) x-rays showed some minor healing as well as a movement in the fracture (now more displaced).

Referred to foot & ankle ortho surgeon, who I was able to see 2 weeks later (April 20). X-rays at that time showed no additional movement & small amount of healing (callus). Said displacement was at 16%, surgery usually definitive at 20%. Gave me two options, recommending the later. First option-continue without surgery, hoping it will heal--there was a 50% chance it would heal to the point where I could start walking in the boot by the end of June. If it didn't heal by this time I would need surgery definitely. Second option was ORIF surgery with screws, plate & bone graft--80% I would be able to start weight bearing in boot by mid-end of June. I opted for surgery, which was scheduled for April 22.

Ortho said surgery went very well. Surgery included 6 screws, a plate & a bone graft from my heel. Immediately after surgery I was placed in splint. Saw ortho surgeon for follow-up today (May 4). He said today's x-rays looked good & placed me in a cast (red & goes up to just below my knee) and said NWB for 6 weeks. Next appointment June 15. Depending on the amount of healing bone shows at that time I will return to my Aircast boot and begin to put weight on it or have it recasted for another 2 weeks.
Returning to work Monday after being off for the surgery. I feel very fortunate that my employer has been great & very flexible during this time, especially since I won't be able to drive until the cast & boot are off.

Have had knee scooter for last 6 wks & will keep until can be weight bearing. Highly recommend one of these. Much easier & more fun than crutches. Surgeon said 65-75% of people don't have any issues with the plates/screws & don't need taken out and even those that do must wait at least a year.

Patience is not a virtue I have much of, so this has been a relatively depressing recovery process for me (was supposed to get new bike for my b-day and was looking forwarding to lots of riding). Reading posts here has helped me feel less alone, so appreciate all the postings. Wishes of fast healing to all!

I had surgery 6 pins & 1 plate!
by: Anonymous

I badly broke my 5th metatarsal in November '10 (in pieces, rotated, dislocated & split from top to bottom). I had a (pink!) fibreglass cast for 10 days whilst the swelling went down, then had it pinned & plated. I was NWB for 8 weeks altogether. No messing about with aircast boots etc. My surgeon said there was no choice really. Anyway, the bone has regrown & I am back to most activities. I am sorry to hear about some of your experiences. It still gets sore as I have to walk on it & the scar is still quite tender, but it is improving very gradually. My surgeon also said it would be 1 yr to 18 months to feel fully better as a foot takes so much pressure unlike an arm for instance. I didn't have a cast on after surgery as it was internally fixated so 'mended' that way. This meant that I kept my ankle & foot flexibility, speeding up the rehabilitation process. I am now doing exercises to strengthen & stabilise my foot. I live in the UK, so maybe practices differ from the US.

Healing time - zero
by: mv1501

Hi all. It seems like everyone has their story, some good some bad. Here's mine:
On May 29, 2010 I missed a step in my home and landed on my left ankle, dislocating it, while the foot twisted below it, breaking the 5th metatarsal bone at a 45 degree angle spirally. To make matters worse, I broke 2 ribs on my right side (no, I was not drunk... just a mom with too many things to do).
Since it was late at night the doctor that lives on my street recommended I go to the ER in the morning. At the ER, they x-rayed my foot and ribs. They put me in a temp cast for 8 days until I saw an ortho. He put me in a fiberglass cast for 4 weeks, and then again for 2 weeks since the bones were no where near healing. No mention of surgery...
I went in every 6 weeks for a follow-up and still no healing; in fact, in October it started to heal INCORRECTLY into an X. I then went for a second and third opinion and they both agreed this should've been operated when it happened. November 18th was my first surgery where the bones were cut (re-broken) and screwed together, and I was placed in a velcro shoe with a sole cut out so I would bear weight on the big toe and not the little one. At my follow-up in January it showed it was still not healing. A second surgery was necessary... Jan.12th the screws were removed and a plate and 5 screws were placed.
April 12th was my last follow-up -- the bones are still separated but a callus is forming on the right side of the bone, sort of like a rod or plate. The doctor is pleased by this, and says I can slowly start to walk normally in a soft larger shoe with no crutches. My foot is still swollen that none of my shoes fit and I feel quite unsure of myself without the orthotic shoe and crutches. I fear re-breaking the bone. :(
It's been almost 1 year and I am extremely worried about this healing time! I take vitamins and Calcium with Vit. D. I don't drink soda or alcohol, so I don't understand why the bones won't heal the right way...

Bone Cyst?
by: Anonymous

These stories sound so familiar. I broke mine 6 years ago and found out today that it healed incorrectly...well it didn't heal. There is a hole in the bone aka a bone cyst. The podiatrist seemed suprised I hadn't re-broken it yet. Has anyone had a similar problem and if so did you have surgery to correct it? I'm trying to decide if I should take my chances with a weak bone or have it fixed before I injure it more severely

Will I still be able to wear high heels in time?
by: Anonymous

Hi! I've recently broken my 5th metatarsal 3 weeks ago (from my research, it's more like a Jones fracture than a fractured toe) from a fall from the stairs. I am currently in a cast and crutches. After seeing the doctor yesterday, he told me to keep the cast on and still walk using crutches for 4 more weeks. I am quite patient about this but I would like to know if I can still occasionally wear high heels in the future. I am a big fan of shoes and I'd die if I can't wear them all! Thanks so much!

I broke my 5th metatarsal January 15th drunk at the bar. Tripped over my friend's foot and all my weight landed on my left foot. Doc said if it doesn't start to heal in two weeks I have to have surgery. I'm very nervous. I've never had surgery before. And reading all these makes my stomach hurt:(

broken 5th metatarsal
by: Jenz

i fell on Christmas day whilst running up the stairs.landed on the side of my foot, instantly had swelling and bad pain, although i didnt feel sick, after listening to family, i thought id just severly bruised it,as i regularly am clumsy walking/running up stairs!!i went up to A&E on 2nd jan 2011, as the pain in my foot was unbearable by this point,i noticed bruising on the sole of my foot which is what made me go and get peace of mind. As soon as a consultant saw my foot he sent me straight for X-ray as he said he was 95% sure id cracked my 5th metatarsal bone. came away from hospital with a temporary cast until i could be seen at fracture clinic.i am told 5weeks in a fiberglass cast and walking boot with some weight bearing and i should be ok. I am due back on 9th feb. hoping all is ok,my foot feels a lot better, cramps and pain have gone.just cold toes now!!!iv made an effort to keep foot raised whilst sleeping, when sat my foot is elevated and i try my hardest to put no weight on it.my cast has become loose around the top of my leg...wasting muscle!lovely.but fingers crossed all will be on the mend :-)

Good Start to the New Year
by: snowboardingislife

Hi! I also broke my 5th metatarcal on New Years! I was drunk and trying to pull my boyfriend out of a bar fight when some guy pushed me down and I landed on top of my foot. Four days later I was walking around putting full weight on it... and then I went to the doctor and found out a little piece of the bone had broken off and been displaced. I had surgery a week after the incident and they put a screw in. Three days after the surgery I was hardly in any pain and after five days I was able to put full weight on it while wearing the velcro boot. Now my doctor says I have to stay on the crutches for 6 weeks and no weight bearing even though Im not in any pain. Im an avid snowboarder, and I feel that I might go insane if I don't get back on the slopes soon, but Im going to ride until the day that I die so I can't afford to have any long term complications. From an athletes point of view, what's the smartest way to ease back into a high intensity sport like this?

In 4th Week of Healing
by: Anonymous

Hi all. I broke my fifth metatarsal on NYE; what a start to 2011! I've been in a big black velcro boot and hobbling around with crutches ever since, hardly bearing any weight on my foot. Just this past week I've been applying a little weight and experiencing no pain, so I'm excited to hear what my ortho says next week at my check-up.

Regarding the calf cramps, they were killing me during the 2nd and 3rd weeks! BUY A HEATING PAD! It will be your hero. And MASSAGE the muscles as often as possible. For the first couple days the heat cured the excruciating cramps momentarily, and after that they were gone completely. I haven't experienced cramps since. Try stretching the muscle if you can by straightening your affected leg and lunging forward slightly with your good leg. This helps, top. Also, if your foot is no longer swollen, stop elevating it. I kept elevating mine despite lack of swelling as it became a habit, and this contributed to my cramps.

I've been using my heating pad 2-3 times daily, massaging comfrey/aloe vera cream into my foot afterwards. Vitamins are a must right now, and I've been taking lots of Vitamins D & K, Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorus. Been eating a banana every day as well as lots of leafy greens. I've limited starches and dairy and have lost about 13 lbs since the new year. Also, limit consumption of alcohol, caffeine and sugar.

I really like this site: http://www.awakenthemagic.com/remedies/bones.html

My lower back has gotten pretty sore. Anyone experiencing that and have a cure?

Rest, rest, rest!

Broken 5th Metatarsal
by: Anonymous

I have an oblique break to my 5th metatarsal and have been in boot and NWB for 6 weeks now. No surgery even though there is a tremendous gap between bones, had xrays re-done at 4 weeks and told no weight bearing until 7th week. Xrays look the same to me, Dr. says its filling in nicely in the middle. Had 2nd opinion and told no surgery as well. I am experiencing tremendous pain and cramping in my foot. I take vitamins, eat one bananna daily and take muscle relaxer at night and nothing seems to help with the cramps. Any suggestions? I can't wait to start walking again very hard to depend on others. Depressing!

Hi, just a quick message. I broke my 5th metatarsal 9 weeks ago drunk on big heels, was put in a cast for 4 weeks, went back after 4 weeks and told no sign of healing so they put me in a walking boot, was sooo upset n worried as was told I might need surgery, even tho it wasnt serious or out of place, whilst I waited the next 5 weeks for my follow up xray I started massaging my foot with aromatherapy oils, I used a base of sweet almond oil, 3 drops of lavender, 3 drops of geranium and 3 drops of rosemary, I did this every single night for 5 weeks, I also ate lots of fish n milk..Anyways went back today and Im told iv healed 80% and Im back in my normal shoes... Just thought Id share that with u all..if you want any further info on the oils, let me know..

Sorry to hear that but there is hope - check with your doctor to see if Jones - is so - pin and/or plate is more than likely -if not should be able to get back to normal within 8-12 weeks. I was able to get bone stimulator - if your insurance let's you - get one - can help carve a month off healing! Once your cast/walking boot is off, you will probably have more calf issues since it was immobile - I did, but gym helped to slowly rebuild. Best of luck!

broken 5th Metatarsal-ended up with clots too!!
by: Anonymous

I stepped out the front door on my way to work, put my left foot down and it rolled over with all my weight on it and it snapped like a twig!! Went to hospital, had xray and back slab put on, handed some crutches and told not to put weight onto it and to return for a review in two weeks. When I returned for check up I was then told these breaks a serious and may not heal, although it is still in alignment and we will see later if it needs a pin. I didnt realize it could be that serious as I thought I would be back to work in 6 weeks maybe 5 weeks if all went well. Thats a joke now!!! While I was there the Doctor asked if the foot was very painful. I said no but I am having more pain in my calve muscle, although this week it was easing, I thought it was cramps. I was immediately sent for an ultasound which showed up clusters of small clots in several areas of my calve muscle. So I am home now injecting myself with Clexane BD and taking warfarin and visiting my local Doctor for regular blood tests. I am 54years old, not over weight and in good health in fact up till this accident I walked daily for an hour. I was told the immobility and cast have contributed to the formation of clots. Good thing I mentioned the pain in the calve I very nearly didnt as it wasnt so painful. This little broken bone is turning out to be a lot more bothersome than i expected.

Broken 5th Metatarsal??
by: Crystal

I had started doing some pretty intense aerobics back in May. I had lost 40 lbs since November 2009 because I was told to be pre-diabetic. I started having horrible pains in my left foot.. I was told it was a sprained ankle. The pain didnt lighten so after 6 weeks I went to the ER where I was told to maybe have a slight stress fracture and given a flimsy post surgical boot. Finally in August I went to a specialist after almost 3 months of pain. He wanted me to get some good shoes and see if that was the problem. He had looked at my xrays and thought the fracture was 15+ years old and by now it shouldnt be causing me pain. After a week of wearing wonderful shoes.. and still having the pain he ordered a 3 phase bone scan which showed the fracture to be symtomatic. Only option by this time was surgery.. which was partially exploratory since he had no clue why this old fracture was now symptomatic. Once he got in there he figured out that I was more than likely born with my 5th metatarsal not completely together(he is guessing the right foot is also the same but since its causing no problems dont mess with it). I had a bone graft put in and a screw. I was NWB for about 5.5 weeks and then taken completely out of the cast. Ive had soreness but no pain since then. Still some slight swelling after 8 weeks post surgery.. but hard to tell. It was the hardest thing Id gone through in my life.

Broken 5th metatarsal
by: Anonymous

I broke my 5th metatarsal (jones fracture) and stress fracture to the 4th metatarsal on July 3 2010. I was just stepping off a curb unfortunately there was a small pothole or un-level ground that took me down. One loud pop and I was done. Went to the ER Wore a fiberglass splint for 4 days, had my first visit with the ortho he had me placed in a cast. I was suppose to return in 3 weeks for another x ray. But, I was having a lot of pain and swelling which made wearing the cast unbearable. The doc told me to come on in and have another xray. This xray showed my bones separating instead of coming together like normal. He said I needed to have surgery ASAP to have a screw placed in order to pull the 5th metatarsal together. But first he wanted an MRI to make sure there were no torn ligaments. MRI showed the separating bone and sprained ankle and ligaments were stressed but not torn. Went in for surgery where they found the bone was not only broken, it was shattered. So along with that screw I also had a bone graph. It is now Oct 20th I have been NWB and re examined every 3 weeks. I was told the 12th (last week) I could bare some slight weight only at home using my crutches and allowing my palms to bear most of the weight on crutch. I am still having a lot of pain and swelling in my foot and ankle. I have been in the aircast boot for 7 weeks and still looks like I will be in the boot for another 6 weeks. What a depressing time it has been to have to depend on everyone else when you are so use to them depending on you. I have been so depressed, with a lot of body aches I should not be feeling at age 45, ugh! I can not wait to walk again. I so want my life back!!!!! But as the doctor has stated it will be a long process to completely heal from this type of brake.

Broken 5th metatarsal-watch out for blood clots
by: Giri

I broke my 5th metatarsal in my right foot 6 weeks ago-tripped down stairs in my backyard on a Saturday. Two days layer on Monday I was put in a cast. I rented a knee cruiser and have been able to go to work. My wife has been incredibly patient and driving me to work all this time. Four weeks into the injury my calf started hurting. I kept ignoring it, but my wife called up the podiatrist and he suggested that I go to the ER and get checked out for a clot. Sure enough an ultrasound test indicated a clot in my calf (also referred to as DVT). I was immediately put on a blood thinner (coumadin ) and am getting my blood tested every week.
I'm entering this to alert others about the risk of a clot when you are in cast. The factors that increase the risk of a clot are all present with this injury:
a) no muscle contractions due to casting
b) less water consumption due to less mobility
c) trauma to the leg

I wish podiatrists can atleast inform patients about the risk for a clot, and also symptoms they should watch out for. A blood clot is lethal, so all those who are in a cast, please watch out and atleast drink plenty of water !

Broke Mine Twice. . . . .
by: kotagirl29

Hi All,

I broke my 5th metatarsal, was in a boot for a month, had to use crutches, keep off it as much as possible etc. I thought everything was fine. Three months later, I was standing on a dining room chair looking for something on top of the fridge, I stepped off and rolled it again. This time I broke it in two places. I had a lot of bone movement but because I lack health insurance, surgery was not even discussed. It didn't heal right the 2nd time. So a year later, I endure a lot of pain if I do too much and fear that if it is not fixed properly, I will have major problems for life. Be careful!!!

Broken 5th Metarsal
by: Lynn

Hi-
Broke mine at my 25th HS reunion tripping over a cooler ( my own so I can't even get mad at somebody else.) LOL

The pain really wasn't that bad and while it was swollen for the the first couple of weeks it looked pretty normal after that.

In one of the walking ugly giant boot casts that is removable.. I'm at the 8 week mark and there is no pain when I put weight on it. One more week to go, hopefully.

Worst part of this injury has been the pain in my back and glutes from trying to walk at the 2.5 inch imbalance from the height of the cast and my other leg. Much more painful than the actual injury.

Any advice on what to do about that? I'm a pretty hard core fitness person already and I'm trying to wear a shoe that has a heel that is roughly the same height as the cast, but its not really helping.

Thanks in advance, Lynn

I'm kind of concerned about my own healing time....I broke my 5th metatarsal on 06/18/10 while WALKING!, and about 2 weeks later proceeded with the doctor recommended surgery to insert a screw in my foot. Though I'm not a major athlete (I consider endurance training to be Black Friday shopping!), the doctor felt as though given my overly physical job it would be best if I went ahead and had surgery at this time instead of risking breaking the bone again somewhere down the road because it was considered a stress fractrure. From what I've read of other people's comments their heal time has been remarkable in comparison with my own. I had surgery to insert the screw on 07/02/10, and spent one week in a splint after the surgery.....after that I went into a hard cast for 3 weeks and for the next month I am limited to non-weight bearing and a boot....I don't question my doctor's authority often, but I do feel as though I might have a lot more pain than what I've read other people complaining of. I still have incredible soreness in the ankle area when I do not wear my boot....similar to an ankle sprain. I have addressed this with the doctor once but he said that the soreness is to be expected, but from what i've read most people have been almost good as new by this time in their treatment! I'm concerned that perhaps I not only injured my 5th metatarsal but maybe my ankle as well. I would love to know if anyone else is suffering from this unusual soreness, because right now I'm not sure how I will be able to return to work in a month if my ankle is still this sore. Has anyone else had the surgery and had these results? Thanks much!

5th Metatarsal Break...one week later...
by: Francis

Broke my 5th Metatarsal on the 31st, July. Landed incorrectly while wakebaording and...snap..ouch! got to the ER quick, x ray told us that I have a stress fracture of the 5th. Doctor had the same exact injury...gave me the DeRoyal boot, told me RICE and the OsCal supplements and to keep the boot on until I see the next doc on the 18th. After 10 days in the boot (without much of any pain) I am doing OK...icing for 20 minutes on/hour off as much as possible. And keeping it UP....

Doc told me that he was running again at 30 days and back to 100% at 90 days. No surgery needed.

Hoping to have the same outcome....starting to really miss running and everything else!!!

Rick - don't stress too much about bruising toes - I had same problem, toes turned purple/black - my podiastrist said it was normal for peripheral bruising even if that wasn't the area injured - if you are using an ace bandage - loosen it up a little - of course if your toes are becoming numb - definitely see podiatrist.

Broken 5th Metatarsal joint
by: Anonymous

Hi Guys,

I managed to break my fifth metatarsal joint from falling off a balcony 3 meters when i was on holiday. Had it bandaged for a week whilst swelling went down with no weight bearing, then got it put in a back slab for 3 weeks. Just had the plaster come off this week and im now into a Cam walker boot for 2 weeks then need another x-ray but the ortho said it was healing well so fingers crossed i ditch the boot next week! I've heard many many things about breaking this bone, i was first told by a doctor i work with that i would most likely require surgery, as apparently these types of breaks cause a LOT of problems in the future (im 22), but when i saw the otrtho the fracture was still pretty well aligned so i think i was lucky. My foot didn't hurt at all until the plaster came off and now it aches. The boot is pretty uncomfortable but its very nice having some freedom in the shower without worrying about wet plaster!

Bruising from boot?
by: Rick

I recently broke my 5th metatarsal and my orthopedist gave me a walking boot with a rocker bottom and an air pump. Recently, I took the boot off to take a shower after wearing it all day and all night. I noticed the top of my foot, right where the toes meet the foot, has bruising. There are three bruises the size of a pencil eraser on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th toe. Again, these are right at the base of the toe on the top side. They don't hurt. They were dark purple but after the shower and some elevation afterward the spots faded quickly. They are still present but less pronounced.

My doctor is closed for the weekend so I can't get in touch. I'm wondering if this is bad or normal. Do I have an ill-fitting boot? I don't think so as it is very comfortable. Nothing seems to poke that area of my foot. Is there any danger from this type of bruise, for instance an indication of lack of circulation?

Non weight-bearing?
by: Anne

I broke my 5th metatarsal near the neck - still aligned okay. Was given a soft cast for a week and aircast walker - soft cast taken off after a week - now just ace wrap and aircast. I was not told to use crutches and even told I could walk if no pain - this seems in contradiction to every posting of other sufferers who have no weight-bearing for weeks. My podiastrist seemed rather busy and rushed through my questions about what I should and should not do. Should I be walking? Also find the boot really uncomfortable around ankle and bottom of the arch (I'm flat footed) has anyone modified their boot with inserts to make it more "walkable"? Would such inserts cause stress on the healing of the bone? I asked my podiastrist and he said - "never thought about it - you could try" Thanks for any help.

Waited Too Long
by: BL

I originally broke my fifth metatarsal about seven years ago at work. I was in a fiberglass cast for 6 weeks, NWB. I got really good on the crutches and used a wheelchair to get around at work (crutches and retail do NOT mix). After six weeks I had the cast removed and had some good-looking x-rays, so the doc gave me a walker boot and I used it for about a month. X-rays after that looked good, so that was it...for a while at least. Via stress, clumsiness, and recklessness, I re-injured it about two years ago. I used a walker boot on and off after having a new ortho look at it. He said then that surgery would probably be required, and that's exactly what happened two weeks ago. It seems to be doing well enough so far. I'm using a walker boot with crutches, and can gradually start putting some weight on it later next week. Plus I'm using an electromagnetic bone stimulator which is supposed to encourage swifter bone fusion. I should be good to go in 10 weeks.

Fifth Metatarsal fractures are notorious for not healing due to lack of blood supply, especially if it's Jones fracture (bottom of metatarsal). I would say in order for a conservative recovery you need to REST and dont put ANY amount of pressure on it for at least 6 Weeks as this could make the bone go thicker and cause more problems and delays in healing. (you would almost certainley require surgery if that happens). Also drink adequate amounts of Milk, eat Cheese and Eggs to give your body calcium. There are a number of factors that help with healing - ie Age/fitness & Non Smoking. If you do all of the above then look at being back to normal after 12/16 Weeks. It seems a long time but believe me its much longer if you dont do the above.

How long....
by: Anonymous

I was walking in the parking lot of my employer and stepped on a rock. I twisted my foot and felt a sharp pain in my foot instantly. I made the walk (very slowly) to my office. I went to see the nurse and had a x-ray show my 5th Metatarsal bone was fractured. I was given a cam boot, a walker and instructed with non-bearing weight for two weeks. This is only my fourth day and after reading the many comments, I'm afraid that i may have to be in this boot for a while due to the slow healing process. I do notice that when the boot is off and I walk around my home the pain is not as bad as when the boot is on. But I know the boot is needed to protect my foot. I hope my healing doesn't take six months to a year or eventually result in having to have surgery.

Me too!
by: Not a fan of crutches

May 7th I broke my 5th Metatarsal. Per the ortho, I was in a fiberglass cast for 8 weeks, NWB and lots of rest. We just removed the cast, and I'm doing better. I am allowed to walk with crutches and very light pressure on the foot. I'll see him in 3 weeks for a final check up. The ortho did tell me that these type of breaks can take some time to heal. I'm learning that patience is a virtue. I do find that if I'm up on my feet alot, my ankle and foot do still swell, but then I ice it and put it up and it's all good.

Twist Fracture
by: GeeJay

Great site! On 4/21/10 the 5th met on my right foot twisted and fractured through after my foot got stuck under a heavy tree branch. Not just a stress fracture. The branch was at the edge of a pile on the ground that I was trimming into smaller pieces. My body kept going to the right but my foot couldn't so it twisted as I went down. Lucky I didn't break my ankle or my head for that matter. Couldn't believe the bone was broken when I saw the xray a couple of hours later. Twist fracture to the middle area of the bone, far enough away from the little toe and the ankle. No surgery needed since I'm not an athlete. Hard-casted and NWB for 7.5 weeks and now am 2 weeks in a CAM walker which looks like a Herman Munster boot. Also known as a soft cast. It's been really tough not walking or driving till now. With the CAM I can walk to my truck, take it off and put on a sturdy shoe to drive then put the CAM back on to walk into the building. At least I'm back to work since the short term dis was ready to end in a few more weeks...and the paycheck along with it. From what I've read the bone will continue to heal over the next year but I must always be careful. And it will always ache when the weather changes. Small price to pay to be up and about again. No more wheeling me out to the backyard for a shower after slipping my casted leg and foot into a rubber bootie. I was lucky enough to hear of a Knee Walker and had one delivered by a medical aids store @ $65 a month rental. Get one if you just started this process or still have lots of time to go NWB. Better than unstable crutches or hopping on one foot with a silly walker. Just Google search for Knee Walker videos to check them out on You Tube. This one is good: Knee Walker Slalom Run by Margarita. Note: Only get one with steering. Good luck to all.

it will heal
by: Ana

I too was scared upon reading the stories of those whose 5th metatarsals weren't healing, but I'm here to tell you, they do heal. I broke mine in April and I'm still healing, still need crutches to walk. I can put weight on my foot though so I'm not hopping. It is just SLOW. Super slow to heal. Do everything the doc tells you. Ice your foot and keep it elevated as much as possible. I've been taking a lot of vitamins too, not sure if that is what is helping, but it can't hurt. Make sure when you take calcium that you take vitamin D to help with absorption. I also take lysene, which is an amino acid. Again, not sure if it helps, but what my body doesn't need, it will just throw off. Good luck with healing!

Broken 5th Metatarsal on March 15, 2009
by: Anonymous

I was stepping over a baby gate and my little toe (right foot) caught in one of the wire squares. Heard the crack while falling to the floor. Broke the 5th metatarsal in 2 places. Was in a hard back splint for a week, fiberglass cast for 4 weeks and now a walking boot for 10 weeks. X-rays last week showed it has only healed 20%! It is crazy. Go back again to doctor Aug. 3 for another x-ray and evaluation. Doctor said if it has not healed at least 50%, they will probably have to do a bone graft. Not sure if I'm ready to deal with a surgery. Lesson learned....do not step over baby gates....take them down!

From my experience, since Feb. I would suggest eating alot of foods high in calcium, lay off caffiene, don't drink any alcohol, and do not smoke. I drank alcohol and caffiene while trying to recover from a 4th and 5th Metatarsal fracture. After 13 weeks there was no sign of bone growth and I opted to do surgery on the broken bones. I am on week 3 post surgery and will not see the Dr. again until 7/20. If I could do it over again I would have quit all the above and been NWB for the first 6 weeks or until some bone growth was present. The most inportant thing is to have Faith in the Lord and alot of patience.

Hate the Crutches
by: Klutz

Was stepping down from the cab of a fire engine and rolled my right ankle over causing my fifth metatarsal to break. Ortho Dr. states it's almost a Jones fracture. I was placed in a plaster cast to my knee and told not to bear any weight on it. Told to wear cast for 4 wks. then he would re-xray. A lot of what I read on the internet leads me to believe these injuries do not heal very easy and sometimes never completely. This is very disheartening. Does anyone have any advice about the healing process. Is there anything to eat more of or supplements to take (ie. calcium).

5th metatarsal
by: Ana

I broke my 5th metatarsal on April 26th. The fracture is high up, very near the ankle. I have been in a giant, black, removable boot since with NO weight on the foot, doctor's orders. I had my 6 week post break x-rays a few days ago and my bone is healing, but the fracture line is still visible, so I'm not 100%. He did tell me to try walking on it a bit. However, I am too scared to do that. Was anyone else too frightened to walk? When you did finally walk, was it extremely painful? I want to know what to expect before I try it, I've treated my foot like glass since the break. My podiatrist said that the 5th metatarsal is the "slowest healing bone in the human body." It should be mid September before a complete heal. Anyone else have a doc that said the same thing? Happy healing to all!

One week after surgery
by: Clinton

I broke my 4th and 5th Metatarsals back on Feb. 21 and spent almost 14 weeks in a cam walker. My last checkup showed I was about 25% heeled. I decided to have Surgery done a week after that. The Dr. took Bone Graft from my hip and pinned and plated my breaks. The spot on my hip is the worst pain I think I have been through. He told me 12 weeks would be the recovery time. Has anybody had this surgery and if so how did the recovery go. I know that results are not going to be the same, but I am hoping to recover alittle sooner.

Nina,
Simmer down stuff happens and this too will pass. You have to take care of yourself and you'll be good as new if you don't over do it. Your child will be ok, just play with her, read to her and she'll be ok. There will be plenty of time to play at a park later. I pray you won't need surgery but will heal quickly. Best of luck to you for a speedy recovery.

I took my own cast off, couldn't stand it anymore. My foot is doing better but I'm really taking it easy. Nina, you do the same. Baby yourself, you need this.

My injury occurred about 5 weeks ago. The first radiologist said it was just fractured but I was in unbearable pain so I went to see an ortho who said it was broken all the way. He casted it up to my knee (for 3 1/2 weeks) - not allowed to put any weight on foot and should have it elevated except to go to bathroom, bathe or short household chores. When I returned to see the ortho they removed the cast, took x-rays, and said that he would send me home with a boot. I should wear the boot except to sleep, bathe or just sitting on couch; keep it elevated. He said he saw "very little bone growth". I'm supposed to see him again on 6/2. Pray for me that I won't need surgury.
I was feeling pretty down since I'm a go, go, go kind of person. My garden is paying the price! My little girl (5) is homeschooled and I haven't taken her to the park but twice. I feel the worst about her...kids love playing with their mommy and daddy, but there's nothing like playing with your friends and running around the park!!
I hope you all heal and I pray that you won't need surgury.

by: Anonymous

Beverly,

I have read through this page and have found that many who have broken their 5th met. are told not to walk on the foot. Some get around and others are on crutches. My doc told me to walk on it but use the velcro shoe, also I'm in a cast. If they put you in a fiberglass cast you can get xrays through the cast, I've gone for 3 so far. However, if you can get one of those aircasts because the plaster or fiberglass cast is not fun, its a huge hassle and very uncomfortable. I can move my toes, and move my foot in the cast plus with no pain. In my opinion you should be in something more supporting at least put an ace bandage along with your velcro shoe. I've heard if this particular bone doesn't heal properly then we're in for big trouble and also pain later on. Good luck, get a 2nd opinion. Get well soon.

What should I do?
by: Beverly

I broke my 5th metatarsal one week ago. A huge hematoma developed and the foot swelled for a few days. The hematoma resolved some and I thought the injury would heal on its own. I hobbled around on it, keeping it elevated as much as possible, however, I had to get around, so I did put my weight on it in various places and only went to the Dr. on Day 4. He confirmed that it was broken. He said there may be a second fracture also, but it's difficult to confirm on the x-ray. Gave me a small black shoe with velcro and said to wear that for two weeks and then come back for another x-ray. Said I didn't need to use crutches...that this shoe would provide the stability needed. I don't think it's providing any stability. He said that if the second fracture is confirmed, it becomes complicated...and I'd possibly need a cast and/or surgery. Shouldn't I be on crutches and have a cast now...or at least one of those boots? I'm concerned that we're not doing enough soon enough.

Broke my 5th met.
by: RAZ

Hi,
I broke my 5th met on April 29th. I'm in a fiberglass cast to my knee. Well it was to my knee, I cut it down about 2" to get some relief since it was hurting the back of my knee. I was told to stand and walk on it the second day which I have been doing. I can see my toes to the top of my foot and they are totally black/blue. I don't have any pain unless I twist my foot accidently. I need to travel soon and the doc told me to go ahead and leave, but I'm afraid of swelling on a long flight. Plus I can't imagine how to keep my foot propped up. I'm going to wait a few weeks but after reading all the stories everyone has written I wonder if the cast will come off soon enough. It seems my swelling has gone down because my cast seems to have gotten bigger and room enough to move my foot around in it. I was thinking I'd be back to normal within 4 weeks. Gook luck to all of you, so many different ways to handle this type of break. Speedy recovery everyone.

See previous comment. But have now been out of the boot for a month. Had quite intense physio as being in the boot for so long (over 4 months!) meant that my foot was quite squashed and I had lost the arch. Now much better. Only advice I have is that you need to keep the foot completely immobile as there is a large tendon at the side of your foot which pulls against the 5th Met everytime you walk. It is a hard bone to heal! Hope that you have a better time than I did. Cheers.

Can you put weight on your heel?
by: This is my last broken bone!

I too have broken the dreaded 5th met in my right foot and have a very good ortho whose opinion I trust (I had him after a broken leg due to skiing) but who does not supply a lot of info. I'm in an air boot and get around quite well at 2 weeks. What I haven't asked is if it's ok to walk around my place without the boot or crutches with the heel of my right foot bearing the weight (no weight on the sole of my foot). I have also increased my calcium intake and D3.
Any comments?

Healing Signs
by: Brad

Hi, I broke my 5th metatarsal on October 28th and the Dr. put me in a boot and ordered no weight bearing for 6-8 weeks. I also have a bone stimulator device to aid in the healing process. I noticed pain and discomfort for the first couple weeks when I would move my leg/foot around especially while laying down. This being the end of the 3rd week, the pain has since subsided.

My mobility has increased and my foot no longer hurts (unless I move it around too much). Does anyone know if these are good signs that my break is healing properly? Any answers are appreciated. Thanks!

Broke mine Sept. 2. Went up for an overhead tennis smash and came down sideways and just kept going down. Heard the crunch- it sounded like stepping on a cicada. (Won the point at least.) I'm a 54 year old female and not good at sitting around. I'm wearing the boot during the day, not driving yet (much to the delight of my 16 year old daughter who now has unlimited use of my car!)and back to the doctor next week. I can't believe it still hurts as badly as it does-- I recovered more quickly from childbirth and an emergency appendectomy!
Stacey nailed it exactly what I'm going through. Didn't know about the calcium pills but I'm a milk-a-holic so hopefully will be OK.
Anybody else getting depressed from their injurys? I kinda am.
On the other hand I may have found a new cottage industry-- I decoupaged my crutches with leopard print tissue paper-- they're FABULOUS! Even Craig Ferguson the comedian thought so when I saw him at a book signing. :-D

5th Med. That little nub of a bone on the side
by: Eggy

WOW! Horror stories for sure. Well one thing is that now I have read the stories I am going back to the doctor and getting more involved. My break happened last week Aug. 28 while skateboarding in Japan. It happened within 24 hours of getting there and I still had 5 more days. Being a skater is of a different breed and we know our injuries better than most. At the time I was rolling my bad ankle and adjusted as to not to do it and in a milliesecond I felt a little YA YA! I knew it wasnt my ankle and had to be a bone. So I spent the next 4 days hobbling around Tokyo, icing it 4-6 times a day, and drinking a lot of beer. The pain was manageable but there. The flight home sucked. I drove home and the when I got home. I was still icing and the swollen-ness had gone down. The black and blue was almost gone to. I finally go into seeing my doctor on Wed, almost a week later.......

He xrayed it and said yep 5th med. He DID NOT say Jones break, which i read alot about and it looks like it is that bone. He put me in a boot and said wear it as much as you can and stay off of it. I can not stay off of it. I have to drive to work and use my left foot to break. Most of the time I have it up and I am working on a computer but still and hobbling around on it. I took it out of the boot and walked around the house to see how it felt and it feels like a tight ankle and a little discomfort on the side. Of course I am telling myself its getting better. It has to get better, and quick.

But now after reading these posts I am going in to talk to the doc again. I dont want to out for 3 months or even six weeks. And also dont want to have to go in for surgery cuz i am walking on it to much.

Just thought I would share my side. Hoping it heals quick and definitely going to get more info on it.

healing
by: stacey

i've posted previously, I broke the 5th metatarsal bone August 10th. Complete break. I was put in the boot and told crutches for 1 week and then slowly try to walk in the boot. Sleep, eat, watch tv, everything in the boot...and I did. As i mentioned before I would take it off every night for 10 minutes. Kept up the calcium pills. September 1 was my 3 weeks. I was told I heal quickly and that I am at 85%. My doctor said to slowly start walking around with laced up shoes. Drive locally no long driving. and take it easy but gradually get back to normal living. This is my second day and it still feels awkward. I get a tingly feeling and a sensation of water on the actual break at random times. I just put my foot up for a few minutes. Driving was scary at first, but today it felt great. my break reminds me she is still there, so i am gentle. I am surprised he said I was a quick healer, but I will take the compliment. I attribute the quick process to the calcium and staying in the boot. Those 3 weeks felt like months, but it was worth the aggravation and frustration for 3 weeks to get on with my normal lifestyle quicker. I wish all of you a speedy recovery and keep the boot on. Best of Luck!

5TH MET CLEAN BREAK
by: Anonymous

I had a clean break of my 5th MT on Aug 7th. I was leaving a friend's house in Tampa,FL on my way to drive to MA. I moved back because I've been out of work since Feb. I felt and heard the foot crack when I stepped on the double lipped thresh-hold. Actually I might have weakened that area over a week earlier when I bashed my lower left foot against the lip on a stair. It was swollen and I iced it but it didn't hurt to walk on. This particular morning I knew it was broken. However, I proceeded on my journey north and thank goodness I had planned a few overnight stays with family and friends as I stayed in Atlanta not 1 night but four. Went to the Urgent care the next day as foot was swollen all over and I couldn't walk on it at all. I was told 3 weeks but that has come and gone. Swelling re-appears at night. I did try going without the ace bandage and velcro shoe a couple of times but I don't think my foot is ready for long walks. W/O work there is no insurance. I was supposed to have an airboot but the doctor and I stuck to the Ace Bandage and flate velcro due to my $$ status. I have a feeling this will take a while longer. In the meantime it has been very frustrating for this dance lover to stay still. Good luck to all of you.

Everyone, I feel all of your pain - 2 years ago this September, I broke my 5th Metatarsal coming out of a Yoga class...........go figure....

With other people walking out, and being in a very poor lit area, I was with a friend who was gradually leading me to the left of the ramp, that we were walking out on, which had probably a 10" drop on the side of it (no railing either) - well within a few seconds walking down the ramp I slipped off and broke my 5th Metarsal in 4 places - we both heard the "POP" she actually thought someone dropped something, but it was my bone - My foot gave out, and I collapased on my knee and hand, which also now have damage. After going directly to the hospital - my foot was sooooo swollen and painful, a Jones fracture was diagnosed - it was horrible and still is - my foot and hand have never been the same - my foot gets so swollen sometimes it reminds me of Fred Flintstone - throbbing and red after very little walking.

Well after 2 dr's reviewing the x-rays, surgery was the best option for me, however it still has not healed, leaving me to prepare for surgery next month to have the 3 1/2" screw removed. This has been horrible - I have gone from being very active, to basically not doing much - and to wear a high heel - forget it.

Getting through a day of work - I am on my feet a lot is tough - not to mention grocery shopping -

Everyone is different, some breaks might not be as bad as some heal faster, I will share with all of you, I am pretty healthy Thank God, and this has been VERY TOUGH - I wish all of you a speedy recovery however 2 years and I am still not done.

If you have never suffered from an injury that prohibits you from walking, you just don't and can't understand - I was out of commission for months - but eventually after the surgery and very attractive boot was removed, you will be able to walk - to what degree? no one knows -

Well surgery number 2 next month - hope it goes better : )

Too all the above, I can actually say I know how you feel. People driving, shopping, doing laundry, cooking, taking dogs out, cleaning after bunnies, carrying bags all for YOU. I hate it. I am 37 and have broken many things over the years playing sports. Last one - an ankle 6 years ago. This time the 5th metatarsal. My husband says if I were a horse they would have shot me by now. I am on crutches and the boot for 6-8 weeks. NO DRIVING for 3 weeks! We will see about that one. I am in the Philadelphia region and have some great doctors. I too feel the pain and frustration. For those in a full cast - been there and sorry this will not apply to you. I take the boot off every night for 10 minutes and slowly stretch my calf muscles and try moving my ankle. I am terrified I will break bone more if i do much more. I love stretching, so it helps. I also massage my muscles and ankle and the rest of my foot except near break. I take 600mg calcium tablets 2x per day, that always helped the healing process in the past, hoping it works this time. My best advice, ALWAYS seek an orthopedic surgeons opinion, and when they say no weight, they mean it. If you want to get back to everyday joys - listen - and do what is best for your body. I am trying, it's not easy being patient ( this coming from someone who cant sit still for more than a 1/2 hr sitcom). So on that note GOOD LUCK to all the above and happy healing:)

5th metatarsal (Jones Fracture)
by: Mechanic

I had my accident at work on 6/29/09. After checked out by this what so call "doctor" at the Emergency Clinic. I was told that I had a sprained ankle. Ace bandage and light duty at work was my perscription. The same night my foot turned into black and blue, and it was swallon. I went to see my orthro-doctor the next day,and I was told that I had a Jones Fracture. The recovery time will take from 4 to 6 weeks, and the doctor will evaluate after the 2 weeks if surgery is necessary. Unfortunately, this is a WORKMAN COMP CASE and I have to see the company assigned orthro-doctor. Today,I went for my 7 weeks visit. NO major development and no callus formation at fracture area. Everything remains the same as before. And I was told that I would need a surgery in order to speed up the recovery. I read some article about the bone stimulator(Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy). Any advise on this device? I know that even if I go with the surgery,I am still looking at 12 weeks of the post-op recovery.

Re: Let pain be your guide
by: Christabel

In response to anon who asked if anyone has been told this.
I broke the base of my 5th met in March, was put in a backslab then a fibreglass cast 2days later. I was told by the 1st dr to weightbear as much as poss, then went back a week later due to swelling & was told by another dr "let the pain be my guide".
Like everyone else here I got conflicting advice all the way through. My fibreglass cast was on for 4 weeks then removed and I was told to start walking again normally- with no airboot, no crutches, no physio. The pain was extreme, after 2 days the swelling went up to my knee. When I told the clinic they said this was normal. A week later I was re-xrayed and they found it was still broken, more than before. So I got a 2nd fibreglass cast, told to weightbear (letting pain be my guide), and it was removed after another 4 weeks (this time after xraying it first). I was told its not fully healed but theres enough healing for me to start using it again.
I've been going to physio now for 2 months and still cannot walk normally or without pain. Now i've been told to "work through the pain" for it to get better!
I dont know who to listen to now so am just doing whatever i'm told.

Hi Danny, I'm feeling rather fed up too (my posting is the one before yours).

I've noticed on ebay that you can get the aircasts for a reasonable price, would this be an option for you.

Me too, I can't wait to get back out to the gym and walking, I'm going mad being stuck in.

Let me know how you get on.

5th Metatarsal
by: Janet

I broke my fifth metatarsal and I have been told it is a Jones fracture 5 weeks ago, I also damaged my ligaments and tendons in the fall. I fell on a cobbled pavement.

At first I was put in a temporary plaster cast at A & E and told not to walk on it, I ended up having to back the same day for another plaster as the original one hurt me so much.

I had the second plaster on for 4 days and then went to get a fibre glass one put on, and still no weight bearing, this was on for 4 days and then I had to get windows cut out in the ankle area as I had suffered a terrible ankle inversion in the fall and the plaster was hurting my ankle bone as they couldn't get the foot straight to fit the plaster. Two days later this was removed and yet another plaster was put on.

Four days later I couldn't stand the pain in my ankle any longer, it was worse that the broken met pain, I went back and the cast was removed and I was then given a tubigrip bandage and told to weightbear, this I tried but it was so painful.

In sheer desperation after a week, I went back and was given an aircast. This is still very uncomfortable to wear because of the ankle inversion but at least I can take it off when resting and in bed, but still told to try not to weight bear, very difficuly when you have a 5 month old baby as I do!!!

At 4 weeks I went back to the fracture clinic was xrayed and told that the fracture wasn't healing but there was new bone formation and that I could walk without the aircast. Easier said than done, it was so painful I have gone back to the Aircast.

I have an appointment on 17th August when it will be 7 weeks since I broke my met, I'm totally fed up and really concerned at the amount of conflicting advice I've been given.

I saw my own podiatrist and she said do what your body tells you to do, if it hurts don't walk on it, if it's ok, weight bear slightly.

It's been really hard looking after a baby with this injury, especially as she is now over 6 months and starting to crawl!!

Has anyone else had a problem like this and also an inverted ankle?

Thanks.

by: BrendaV

I broke my 5th metatarsal when I stepped on a black cable at a local carnival. My foot wobbled back and forth and I must have gasped. My friends kept asking if I was ok and if I sprained my ankle. I physically could not speak to answer them; the pain was so bad. I limped around for 3 weeks before seeing a podiatrist. She sent me to an orthopedist who put on a hard cast. No one ever told me to stay off of it, elevate, bed rest, etc. The first day I had the cast I cleaned and vacumned my whole house, did laundry, made 3 batches of zucchini bread, watered the flowers, etc, etc. I didn't realize I was supposed to take it easy. I'm glad I found this website. I'm a 45 year old overweight woman and now I'm going to sit down and read a book.

I also broke my fifth metatarsal on july 19...taking a misstep out of my friend's front door (landed on the edge of a very thick doormat and my right foot rolled over)......anyway I was taken to a clinic by Johns Hopkins and given xrays and an air boot. No crutches. They said i could walk on it. I asked and they said no crutches.
This happened the day before I dropped my kids off at sleep away camp for 4 weeks....I came home and saw a dr....and she also took exrays and said to "let pain be your guide" and if it hurts don't walk on it....use a cane....so I walked on it bec no pain....now....6 or 7 weeks into having the airboot on I am in pain and getting worried...I am using a cane but don't really feel that it helps much.....I go back to the dr next week and just want to hear from others who were told they could walk on it....I think my break is also a jones break....as last dr appt she said it is in an area that gets little blood flow.....this dr is with lenox hill and seems very accomplished and respected...did anyone else get the "let pain be your guide" instruction?

Up the down staircase

64 years old. Broke mine on may 6 by dropping a railroad tie about two feet on top of my foot. thought at first that ankle was broken. Casted next day soon to find out I have castaphobia. Had to take tranquilizers to keep from taking it off myself. Two weeks later into boot no weight bearing. Two weeks later not healing. Three weeks later not healing decite to operate 10 days from then. Operation goes well. Back in cast for 10 more days and back on tranqs. It's now been three weeks since operation. Foot starting to feel like its healing. Back in boot 11 days after op. This has been a real challenge as we live in a two level house and not a level space on 11 acres. Up and down stairs on butt as I took a tumble hopping down. Will not take a chance of reinjury. Good luck to all. I think the moral of our stories is don't break a bone in your foot. Never thought such a small bone could cause such grief.

5th Metatarsal break
by: Lisa

I also broke my 5th metatarsal on 22/04/09. I attended A & E where I was xrayed and confirmed I had broken the 5th metatarsal, explaining that the tendon had pulled the bone apart. I was told to come back in 2 days to see the orthopaedic consultant. I went back to the ortho and was told it was a bad break and that I may need an operation which entailed having a screw inserted into the foot. I was given an appointment for 2 weeks to review the healing. When I returned 2 weeks later I seen the consultant and he told me it had come further apart and kept me in there and then and said I needed the operation straight away. I had the op the next morning which was very painful!! I was discharged the next day and told to come back the following week. When I returned I had another xray and I was told that the bone looked as if it was healing well but I was to come back the following week to have the stitches out. I returned the following week, had the cast removed and I was given a support boot which I was to pump up with air and told to keep using the crutches and keep it elevated and to return in 4 weeks. I went back after the 4 weeks and had another xray and was told that it had shifted and I will need another op to remove the screw (which I am not looking forward to) and possibly remove the fragment of bone! BUT.... there is a 3 month waiting list and I have to wait for a bed to become available! The consultant marked on my file "soon". So I am still out of work, still in pain, my foot is still swollen, I have pains in my groin and hip every night and I have shooting pains up my leg and where my foot joins with my leg it is like an electric shock everytime I touch it! A complete nightmare! And this happened in work, I stepped in what I thought was gloss paint and I tried to wipe it off before getting into my friends car and I stepped over a little wall onto the grass to wipe it off my trainer but the stuff started going up the side of my trainer so I thought I would wipe it on the edge of the kerb, so I went to step back over the wall and I had no grip, I remember falling foward and I quickly pulled my other leg over the wall and I felt and heard the snap! But I cant say I felt it twist or turn in! I then found out that it was not paint it was yogurt! If I had known that I wouldn't have bothered goign to all the hassel of wiping it off on the grass! I will keep you updated on my recovery!

After breaking my 5th Met mid shaft 4 weeks ago i looked on many pages to check on healing time and what i could do to speed up the healing process. I have to say that reading all the stories online it made me quite afraid as people were saying it takes months, sometimes years before strength is back, that surgery is a possibility and that sometimes it never heals properly at all. Well, here is my story. 4 weeks after my break (and it was bad) my plaster cast was removed and I was able to walk fully, no pain, no surgery, no problems. The point i want to make here is that every case is different and if i learned something during this painful process was to not listen to the bad stories and stick to a healthy diet and wish for the best. Sometimes, advice is not needed :-)
To all of the people who feel like their life is over from their broken bones, it will get better and just keep your head up and dont listen to these dreadful scary stories.

Hang in There, Ruby!
by: Sue

I just broke my fifth metatarsal on 7/07/09--I fell down my sister's stairs while we were on vacation. I feel like my summer plans were ruined, too. I am 41, and this is the first bone I've ever broken. At first I was in a splint and crutches from the ER. When I arrived home (after a 9-hour drive), I went to the orthopedic doctor and received a Bledsoe boot with aircast. I am able to walk in the boot without crutches now. I go back for x-rays in one month. It gets easier--my foot is all shades of black and blue--but it doesn't hurt any longer. I'm trying to eat well and rest a lot. Good luck to you!

Thanks 4 this website & to the people leaving comments. I just broke my 5th meta., 07/09/09 at work. Went to ER a few hours later & hoped it wasn't serious until the pain made it 2 hard to move it. This is the 1st time I broke anything & I'm in my 40's. I hate this mishap because I had my summer all planned out &... but what can u do but make the most out of it(Thank GOD for advanced tech that have made the disabled world a lot better).
I was sent home with a bandage, velcro shoe & crutches.I am now in the "handicapped world". I wish I could afford a scooter but since I can't I might have to break down & get a wheelchair after reading all the comments posted as far as possible healing X, it would b worth the $ 2 get around outside. I now at least have some idea of what I could possibly expect. I go to the orth Dr, @ 2 wks so reading these comments helps since this is all new. Now I just NEED 2 know what type of break it is & how bad. I can't wait 2 find out. 2 everyone GOOD LUCK!

Thaanks again for you assistance and comments
The fracture is where the nob comes out of the foot near the middle.
They advised the tendon had broke the bone when I twisted the ankle called
Avulsion 5th Metatarsal Fracture

I am 100% it is a Jones Fracture but the hospital will not agree with me
I just hope it is healing ok
I am full walking again on the Docs advise but with a small limp and lots of strong painkillers that have made me quite poorly.

I may go back after 6 weeks and demand an x ray to check the bone has knitted back together I have asked a top physio and we are all within our wrights to do this.

I hope you heal ok
Kepp me up to date with your progress please

I am an Insulin Dependant Diabetic and hope this does not hamper the recovery.
The Docs said it will not but who trusts them
Certainly not me after my various misshaps with hospitals

Thanks Gavin

5th metatarsal break
by: Adela

I broke my foot on April 13, 2009. I went to the ER the next day and was x-rayed and put in a type of cast that was like a splint. I was told not to put any weight on my foot at all and see my podiatrist. Went to the podiatrist and was told to come back after four weeks. When I returned after 4 wks. he said it was on its way to healing. I was then told to wear the cast for another 4 weeks at which time I was then to return to the doctor. I went on June 18th and was told I could now begin to put weight on the foot and that it was healed enough for weight bearing. I cannot even walk because my entire leg is so stiff. All of my ligaments and tendons are like a tight rubber band. I requested therapy from my primary and I start on Friday. I am so scared, hopefully it has healed since now it has been over ten weeks. I am still afraid to walk, I guess I don't really trust doctors. They seem so flipant like it doesn't really matter if I walk again or not. Any opinions on whether or not 10 wks. with absolutely no weight bearing seems like enough time to heal, 9 of those wks were spent in a cast.

Jones Fracture help for Gavin
by: Melissa

I broke my foot 6 days ago. I went to the ER and was immediately put into a plaster splint, told under no circumstances am I to walk on my foot and referred to an ortho. to get a cast. I took my x-rays to the ortho. and found out I actually have a Jones Fracture.(Help for Gavin:) This is when the break is at the base, but the base is actually farthest away from your toes. If you put your hand on the side of your pinky toe and follow it up as you get a little past the middle of your foot you will feel a "nob", this is where the metatorsal bones end and that is a Jones Fracture. Gavin's break the way described sounded like it's down on the base of foot where the toes start?? If that's where your break is then your Dr. is correct and it's not a Jones Fracture. If you look at the first couple of posts on this page there is actually a link describing and showing a Jones Fracture. I was originally going to the Ortho. to get a cast put on but my doc decided he'd put me in a walking boot but I still have to use crutches and am not allowed to let my foot touch the ground. He will check in 6 weeks and is hopeful. I got the boot today and the pain I am feeling is horrible, worse than the day I broke it, (I went to work that night and walked around on it all night,I am a night auditor for hotel and am the only employee on shift). Guests were very needy that night. I barely made it through that night but don't think I'd last even 1 hour with the amount of pain I am feeling right now. I was glad the doc gave me the boot at first but now am wondering if it was more convenient for him than me. He squeezed me in for an appt. because I was supposed to have an appt. for another day that the receptionist somehow never finalized and my appt. was never made leaving me to wait 2 weeks after the original break for a next available appt. So, I think the doc had a full day and gave me the boot so he wouldn't have to spend the time to do an actual cast. Do you think this is standard procedure to go strait from a break to the walking boot or should their have been an actual cast??

Tomorrow I go and see my podiatrist and hopefully get to walk on my foot again after using crutches and wheelchair for 6 weeks since operation, I had 2 screws and wire wrapped around my broken 5th metatarsal. I'll let you know after tomorrow if I get a boot or can wear shoes, if i have any that will fit now. The foot looks good now but by nighttime it is swollen if I don't keep it up. Can't wait to walk again.

Broken 5th Metatarsal
by: Anonymous

Ugh, where to start? I broke my meta-tarsal, while working in my classroom. I went to the Occupational Med. Dr. and they put me in a cast. The bone was broken clean through. I was off for 11 days. They took me out of my cast and put me in a cam walker. I went to work, painfully; and two weeks later, the podiatrist xrayed my foot. He told me to bone was breaking further apart, as I looked on the xray, he was right. He put me back in a cast, instructed no weight-bearing and ordered a wheel-chair. I tried to work, getting my wheel-chair out of my car, while using crutches. I almost fell, and it was hard to teach. I went out completely on workman's comp. I was seen a month later, the bone is healing, but only 1/2 way. I was put back in another cast, and told another month. I broke it originally on the 6th of April and have to wait until the end of June to get it off -- maybe! ??? After all this, and my kids wanting me to enjoy summer with them, does anyone know how long physical therapy will take, before I should be good to walk normally again?
Thanks,
teacher

Broken 5th Metatarsal

I finally went to the doctor because of foot pain and I found out I had a non-union Fracture at the base of my 5th Metatarsal as well as another break that was in the process of healing. After thinking about it for a while, I realized the non-union fracture was from around 9 years ago, and the break I did over a year and a half ago. They are doing surgery on the 19th in order to remove a piece of bone, and shave down the other bone. Any anyone gone through something like this? If so about how long before I'll be able to get back to "normal" life?

Broken 5th Metatarsal Jones Fracture??? HELP
by: Gavin NEED HELP ASAP

Please give me your best advice ASAP
I broke my 5th Metatarsal by going over on my ankle on the 9/5/2009 was put in a foot plaster
Just went back today for check up
Doctor advised all ok no plaster required now
Showed me X RAYS as I asked it is broken actually on the base part of the bone wright on the edge clean the actual part that comes out of the edge of your foot.
I said to the Doctor
THIS IS A JONES FRACTURE THEN
The Doc said no if it was a Jones fracture it would be treated differently and you would have a up to the knee plaster on.
I said are you 100% this is not a Jones Fracture
She said certainly not
Sent me away without re xraying it
Told me to wear some steel toe cap boots or any strong boots and to put weight on it gradually.

If you look at your picture it is the actual red area where the base of the bone is the fracture is angled about 4/6 mm from tip

This is NO JONES FRACTURE SHE SAID

Help Please advise me what to do

I have been to the ortho was given an air cast. Was told to wear it at all times. Not to put any weight on it.
Had my second appointment with the ortho, was told that the x-rays show the bone has not even started to heal yet. it has been 6 weeks since i broke it.
I am getting worried. I am getting shooting pains in my foot. I am hoping i do not have to have a screw put in after all.

5th metatarsel broken bone
by: toni

3 weeds ago I was going down a step and landed on the side of my left foot, immediately I felt sick to my stomach and faint. I went to the ER on a sun. night and they took xrays and said I had a break and told me to see a podiatrist. The next day I took the CD xray and the dr. said I needed surgery to have 2 screws put in, the break was long. On that Fri. I had surgery and he put in 2 screws and some wire to keep bone together, a back cast and wrapped up and to stay off for 6 to 8 weeks. The following mon. I had to get on anitibiotics (for 1 week)because of the swelling. Two weeks later I got the stitches out and this week I am going back to get xrays done to see how it is healing. I've been on crutches the whole time and can't put any weight on my foot. I have gotten a wheel chair to get around better in the house.

broken metatarsal
by: Anonymous

I broke it landing a kick in taekwondo. I'm only assuming its the 5th metatarsal because of where the swelling was located when it first broke. I am going back to the hospital of get copies of the xrays so I can see for myself. I have an aircast on, I go back to the dr.'s in 3 weeks. I didn't know if I was supposed to sleep with the aircast on (I have been), I don't know how long I'll have to wear it for, I don't know when I'll be able to resume taekwondo......I did some research as to what foods I should be eating to speed bone healing...I wasn't even told the type of fracture, nothing, but I guess I didn't ask the right questions when it was all happening either.

Sigh.

Not sure?
by: Mardi

I broke my 5th Metatarsal exactly 2 weeks ago. I went to the ER and they told me to see an ortho doc. When i went they just gave me a shoe and said it would heal in 4-6 weeks. I didn't have a bad fracture.I still have some terrible pain but not from the fracture.Since using the crutches my leg and big toe cramps up. Does anyone know why?

Good luck . . .
by: Joe (josephhopkins@hotmail.co.uk)

Your complications seem to echo that of my problems though I have not had to have surgery I did have to back in cast after walking on it.

From research I have done regarding my own break provided you have no further problems with the screw that they have put in you should be looking at 6-8 weeks, also this is a strange comment to include but try and sleep with your foot hanging out the bed. A physio gave me this tip to help the blood flow to the break area as it commonly a poor part of the foot with regards to blood supply, this is why 5th metatarsals are common to heal slowly.

Good luck with your recovery and hope you are back to normal soon. Such a small bone has also caused me alot of grief!!

Broken 5th Metatarsal
by: Anonymous

To the last person that posted....not sure about the weight bearing thing. I broke my 5th metatarsal On March 31st. Whent to the ER, they said yep it's broken at the base of the bone and you will have to see an ortho. I did not realize that this was such a tough break to heal...bummer! The ortho put me in a aircast with ctutches and said no weight bearing for two week, then gradual weight bearing over the next four weeks with the aircast and crutches. I am very worried that this might make things worse. I have been applying very light weight to the injured foot. I go back on May 8th to get a check up and see how things go. Do not want surgery so here's hoping!!! Good luck everyone!!

DAMN METATARSAL!
by: Joe (josephhopkins@hotmail.co.uk)

Hi everyone, Im Joe, Im healthy and 23 years old. I dont smoke and I drink very occasionally at the weekend. Im active daily and coach youth development at Gillingham FC. I am currently in the process of my 5th metatarsal break healing. I was unfortunate in that when I broke my foot it was the dreaded Jones fracture (the awkward break)! This injury accrued whilst at football training after I landed awkwardly after going up for a header. My foot and ankle swelled up immediately and I was in a lot of pain.

- The break was confirmed at hospital and I was put in a cast on the 3rd of December 2008 and allowed NO weight bareing.

- On the 27th of December the cast was removed. (it was then the hospital made a VERY BIG mistake) They did not re Xray my foot and just because I could put weight on it a registrar sent me away to weight bare on the foot and said this will be fine in 3-4 weeks.

- 2 weeks later I return in alot of pain, and guess what, yep, it was still broken. So they put me back in another cast and said they would re asses it in two months. So on the 3rd of March 2009 3 months after the actual break I was back at Hospital. It has now (very slowly) started to heal but Iv been told this could take another 2 - 3 months before I can be physically active i.e running ect and a year before it will be 100%.

IF I CAN GIVE YOU ANY ADVICE TODAY IT WOULD BE: BE VERY VERY VERY PUSHY TO ENSURE YOU GET THE CORRECT TREATMENT! ORDER TO HAVE YOUR FOOT X RAYED BEFORE THEY LET YOU LEAVE THE HOSPITAL AND ASK FOR A COPY OF THE X RAY'S AND GET A SECOND OPINION IDEALLY A SPECIALIST! I WAS TOLD THIS INJURY WOULD TAKE 6-8 WEEKS WHEN IT HAPPENED ITS NOW BEEN 14 WITH ANOTHER POSSIBLE 8 TO BE ADDED! THAT IS NOT A MIS JUDGMENT OF A WEEK OR TWO! THAT'S A 3 MONTH MIS JUDGMENT! IT SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE NOT SURE THEMSELVES AND ARE JUST GUESSING.

I sincerely hope anyone with this injury is treated a hell of a lot better than myself. Good luck

5th Metatarsul with Avusion - Jones ????
by: Nancy

I took a fall while working in thailand and was Diagnosed with a 5th metatarsul Jones fracture with avaulsion. They place a temp. soft cast on due to swelling and told me to stay off it. One week later, went back for reXray and the fracture widening was worse (I did walk on it using crutches because I didn't want to miss work-Stupid of me!!) So then the hospital put a hard fiberglass cast put on (not removable)

Flew to Seoul and was rediagnosed with NO Jones fracture but still have the 5th metatarsul with avulsion . Working from my hotel room bed now and staying off it. 6 weeks out.

Next Monday, new xray and maybe cast off ( 49 days after injury). I am not sure if I will be able to walk on it .... being told I will need therapy for walking strength, balalnce and endurance.
Must get back to my office in China. Meanwhile my family in Michigan is going as crazy as I am.
All alone in Asia at 51 years old with a broken foot.
My US Doctor will see me in June and assures everything can be fixed even if it didn't heal right overseas. Maybe need a pin. Jones fractures also are hard for doctors to diagnose properly .

Mind those bones
by: Anonymous

Hi Carol here again,
sorry to hear about your trouble. I would advise you to return to the doctor a.s.a.p and have it checked out.
Mine is fine now, but a bit sore when walking, but no swelling thank God. I guess there will always be a bit of weakness in the bones that we break. The younger you are the better healing you can expect.
Take care of yourself and have itx-rayed again,
Good luck Carol

5th metatarsal broken bone the mid-shaft with displacement
by: Janet

I had an accident at the beach on my vacations in Puerto Rico, this cause the 5th metatarsal bone to break the mid-shaft with displacement and also its a long horizontal breakage. This happen back on 8/30/08, I had a cast on for about 6 weeks or so, when I got my x-ray there was no callus growing. At that time the doctor decide I need it surgery, but when I got back to NY to the new doctor he told me to wear timberland boots for a month. I did not had pain but since I stated walking again my foot is getting swelling and I've been having pain and redness at the injury area, also I get pain going up my leg after walking. Do you think that walking on my foot aggravated the injury or this is normal.

Thanks in advance for your responce.

Fracture may be different than yours
by: Bart - SII

Hi Carol - the new comment that you received notification about was your last one that was posted - the system notifies you of every one that is posted, even if it is your own :-)

Got your email - sounds like you are doing well - as far as the other woman's restrictions for walking, there could be any number of reasons for this - her fracture may be in a different place, it could be healing slower than yours, or she may just have a more conservative physician... you never know.

Good luck with getting the cast off on the 9th - keep us posted!

Bart

Me back again,
well only one week and a day to go to get plaster off.
Hopefully bone will have healed by then, and wont have to have any further treatment, except maybe some physio which i don't mind, if it helps.
Thanks for you comments, and keep fingers and toes crossed for me for a good outcome.
Will appreciate my feet when i am fully back on them. You never miss the water til the well runs dry is a saying here in Ireland, how true.
Thank God for our feet.

6 weeks is normal...
by: Bart - SII

6 weeks is the universal time period for fracture healing - that is what just about every physician follows when it comes to time lines for wearing a cast. So, your doctor seems to be on the right page.

Whether or not it will be completely healed by that time is hard to tell. As our bodies get older, the heal a little slower - so that may make a difference - maybe an extra week or two. The other thing to consider is where along the 5th metatarsal the fracture is. Mid shaft fractures generally heal normally, where as base of the 5th fractures (Jones Fracture) can sometimes take much longer to heal because of the blood supply to the bone.

No matter what, once you get close to taking off the cast, your doctor should take an X-ray to make sure the healing is on its way before giving you the go to start walking and resuming normal activities.

As far as after the cast comes off, your foot will be stiff and tight, so working on improving your range of motion is the number one goal, followed by strengthening. You might talk to your doctor about a referral to a rehabilitation clinician (physio) so that they can help with your recovery. You can probably just get some exercises from them that you can do at home.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions and to let us know how you are doing.
